We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nolan Gray a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nolan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
One of the best investments I’ve made has been with my time—learning instruments and diving into music production software. Developing these skills not only fulfilled a genuine passion but also opened doors I never expected. For example, my knowledge of music production eventually led me to start producing podcasts for others, which has now become my main gig.
I never pursued these skills with the intention of making money; I was just chasing what I loved doing. Because I wasn’t focused on monetizing it at first, I had the freedom to explore, have fun, and truly get lost in the process. That’s what made it so rewarding. I’d encourage anyone to invest time in hobbies that genuinely interest them, because you never know how they might shape your future.
Nolan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I learned piano and guitar at a young age and have been in love with music ever since. I have my own solo project under Electric Father. You can find my music on Spotify, Apple, and most other streaming services. This summer I released a single called “Same Sun” and have more music on the way!
Supporting other artists in bringing their musical vision to life has been just as rewarding as crafting my own tracks. I’m also an audio engineer and began offering my audio services under Indigo Sound, LLC in 2020. I specialize in high-quality mixing, mastering, and podcast production services. What sets me apart is my ability to blend technical expertise with an artist’s ear, helping my clients bring their ideas to life. Whether it’s producing a polished track or making a podcast sound professional, I offer a personalized approach that’s all about elevating the creative process. How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think a great way to support art and artists is by encouraging creativity from a young age. I can see why art might be undervalued sometimes, since it’s often less about financial reward. But for me, music—especially playing guitar—has always been like a form of meditation. It’s taught me so much about myself and life in general. That kind of effect that music can have on a person is powerful. I genuinely believe music has the power to heal as well as connect people, and it’s something we should always appreciate, celebrate, and support.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that moment when something intangible—an emotion, an idea, or even just a feeling—becomes real and can connect with people in unexpected ways. Whether it’s creating my own music or helping others shape theirs, there’s this incredible satisfaction in knowing you’ve made something that resonates. Seeing how a piece of music you’ve created can inspire someone else is a really cool feeling.
