We recently connected with Kalpna Bora and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kalpna , thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I have always known and felt that creativity is the core of who I am and I am happiest when I create something or express myself through different mediums. I have spent a major chunk of my life learning and experimenting with different mediums like dancing, acting, painting, drawing and sewing. I started working as an actor 15 years ago back in my home country India. I have been creatively active all my life in some way or other. Looking back, If there’s one thing I would change, It would be to view art more from a business perspective, balancing my passion for creation with a focus on growing as an enterpreneur.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, My name is Kalpna. I am from India. I was bitten by creativity bug during my formative years. Since i was four, I I have been fascinated by art, music, dance, drama and allure of the stage. I started my classical dance journey (Kathak) at the age of 4.
My growing years were exposed to lots of creative activities like dancing, stage performances, choir singing, inter-school competitions and art activities, all credit goes to my parents and school teachers. The continuous learning and creative environment around me blossomed me into a determined artist hungry for more. I worked as a performer and an actor in television industry (Back in India) for a decade.
After working in many different professions, my love and passion for dance brought me back to the stage. I moved to the US in 2018 and decided to share my expertise and passion for this performing art with the world. I run an indian dance school Nrityakalpna Dance School where I train young kids and adults in bollywood and kathak Dance.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that dance is a powerful form of expression that offers multiple benefits to the personality. It aids in the emotional, cognitive, physical, and social development of a child. My aim is to spread love and awareness about our culture and craft to the next generation and keep the community united with the joy of learning and dancing.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is likely the sense of fulfillment that comes from expressing myself and constantly exploring new mediums. I have spent a lifetime immersing myself in different forms of art, and the process of learning, experimenting, and evolving creatively is deeply satisfying. Being an artist gives you a freedom to be happy and content in your own creative world without being distracted by noise round you. There’s also a unique joy in being able to connect with others through my work, whether it’s through acting, painting, or another medium. For someone with my range, that ability to bring ideas to life and share them with the world is incredibly rewarding.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
To best support artists, creatives society can take several important steps like providing more public and private funding opportunities ensuring that artists have the financial resources to focus on their craft without constant worry of making ends meet.
Offering affordable or free spaces for artists to create, perform, teach or exhibit their work such as studios, theaters, galleries etc.
Investing in comprehensive art education at all levels cultivates creativity from a young age, helping to build a foundation for future artists.
Society should continue to highlight the importance of the arts by giving more platforms for artists to showcase their work wether through traditional media , digital platforms or public spaces.
