We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mary-charlotte Young. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mary-Charlotte below.
Mary-Charlotte, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Usually, the main misunderstandings when it comes to my music are 1) I’m not interested in writing or covering bright, sunny songs and 2) my singing style isn’t an imitation of the typically beautiful style of popular female vocalists.
The songs I write have a darker, rougher edge and often hit on subjects rarely touched in mainstream music. I don’t like cheesy, shallow lyrics and want to envelope the listener in a story. The stories told are murder ballads, lovin’, and losin’.
I get criticism for not being country enough when the reality is that pop-country radio is just pop music with a banjo and twang. I just keep doing what I’m doing bc the folks that really understand are receptive. IM an ARTIST not a jukebox.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that not everyone has to like it for it to be legitimately good and that a thick skin is required to endure the disrespect that people somehow feel very comfortable dishing out. Disrespect comes from venues and spectators alike unfortunately, but things are great a majority of the time on that front.
Mary-Charlotte, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Trying to stay true to the craft of songwriting and to my own creative force as an artist are import to me. I work really hard to make good songs and hope that like-minded creatives and listeners can appreciate that. I love playing shows and I’m always open to playing new venues so if you need songs, gimme a call.
I’ve been doing this a long time but as I look at the future, I’d love to acquire management or an agent. If you’re in the market for a new artist for your roster, I’m your huckleberry.
This is taken from my bio:
Mary-Charlotte Young is an Appalachia-born, Low-Country raised, Texas-based song maker adept in the dark arts of murder ballads and Southern Gothic Americana
The music has the bones of traditional country and folk and the spirit of vintage rock and soul.
Whether it’s your feet or your heart, Young’s songs are built to move you.
While this daughter of the South pens stories of everyday misfits, she squeezes the beauty out of the ugliness. She finds the profound in the mundane. Borrowing from the American music landscape she captures a sense of nostalgia, beauty, and great making her sound equal parts familiar-fresh-unabashed.
Mary-Charlotte Uoung will pull on your heartstrings and maybe cuss a little. Young’s next record is in progress with a projected release of early 2025 in the meantime you can catch her performing solo or listen to HONKY TONK EYES (2022) + LA AGAIN (2020). AVAILABLE ON ALL STREAMING SERVICES.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Support artists for free by following them on socials and by listening to streaming BUT support artists with your money whenever possible. Music and art are valuable to the whole of culture and should be respected as a legitimate livelihood.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
NFTs seem like a silly waste of money.
