We were lucky to catch up with Joy Marie Hallare recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joy Marie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I started drawing since I was 9 in Qatar. I continued to pursue my art when my family and I moved to America. I studied and enhanced my skills in school and work. Each company I worked with gave me experience in craft and business. As I was using my talent for them, I started to slowly lose myself. Although they funded my art, I didn’t have time work on it. My biggest regret was turning down opportunities when my art was starting to gain attention. Now that I am receiving more gigs , I thought it is time to start anew. It is a challenge to turn a hobby into a career, but I know in the future it will be considered an accomplishment.
Joy Marie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2012 and Associate of Arts in 2009, both majoring in Graphic Design. In 2021, I received a certificate for Computer Aided Drafting and Design. I previously worked as a graphic designer and drafter. During my spare time, I travel to cities and states to display my art on different scales.
I started to do art again during the pandemic. My art has themes of love, fantasy, and adventure with the combination of modern and traditional style.
Each work that I did was not just an experience but give the viewers a moment of their time.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Being an artist takes patience to gain recognition and honor. There are times that when your work doesn’t catch the attention it deserves, we slowly lose our confidence to pursue art. Instead of working on your craft, you start to compete yourself with others. However, when we are at our lowest, art is our hope. It can take years to know what your style is and how it can stand out.
So my advice is to not give up; keep doing art. Every artist’s work starts from the bottom. Get rid of the noise. Focus on yourself. Have the closest peers support you and be by your side. Be consistent. keep in touch with your audience through your art because it can give an impact to them.
Then when you are at the peak, you will realize how far you’ve come.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As I get more gigs, I gain connections with my clients. During the pandemic, when my partner and I painted a mural at Comfort Inn in Santa Monica, one of the guests saw the work and said that “it brightened her day.” In New York, my sketches of the guests were the highlights on my guest’s birthday. Giving people joy through my art is rewarding.
And I hope to continue that.
