We were lucky to catch up with Colt Mclean recently and have shared our conversation below.
Colt, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I would consider myself happy although as an artist I don’t believe happiness is my goal. My goal is to express my feelings regardless of what the emotion happens to be. Some of my greatest work has come from my most painful moments. My most successful expression may form while I feel the most broken, so I invite it all. The happiness lies in the fact I get to share my life experiences through the art and hopefully others can connect with it. At the end of the day you can’t have triumph without struggle and you can’t appreciate daylight without darkness. In regards to ever thinking about another path in life or a “regular job” I believe in manifestation too much to allow myself room for that wonderment. I’m locked in on my crafts and that’s the only way my life goes.

Colt, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since I was young I’ve always been aware of my creative bug. I was in love with expression. Music and movies have always been a passion of mine, along with basketball. I mention basketball because I believe that helped set a foundation for my work ethic, discipline, and it coincides with many interests of mine. Hip Hop has been my true love since I can remember. From writing raps to free styling at lunch tables and on the bus or indulging in many of my favorite rappers music, I was hooked. I was moving around the nation growing up, but the chunk of my childhood I spent in Nashville introduced me to the tangible idea of being in the entertainment industry. I starred in a country music video and began modeling as early as Middle School out there. Fast forward some years, a basketball scholarship helped fulfill my dreams of bringing me out to CA. After a short year of college basketball I dropped out to fully pursue entertainment. Since then I have been living solely off the arts. I’ve made appearances in many commercials and shows such as SWAT, Fresh Prince, All American, and one of the most fun experiences was using my basketball expertise to be the lead basketball skills double for the White Men Can’t Jump remake. With the music, I am extremely versatile sonically while always staying true to my authenticity, my passion for lyricism, and my respect for Hip Hop as a whole. I have so much to say and I’m on a mission to stay genuine. I can’t waste a bar. There’s so much power in words and my gift is the ability to craft them in a powerful way, so I remind myself to not take that lightly knowing the heights I will reach. My goal is to always stay creative, passionate, and to connect with as many people as possible through doing what I love.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’d say there’s simply nothing else I enjoy more than the feeling I get from creating something I love and am proud of. It also feels great to hear and see other people enjoy it, connect with it, or be moved by it. Nothing amounts to the gratification you get from someone telling you your rap is dope, or bringing a person to tears by a performance.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
My favorite books are The Four Agreements, The Power of Now, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, and I am currently reading The 48 Laws of Power. I like anything that will elevate my mind and can be applied to my life. I want to be the best artist I can be and in order to do that I need to be the greatest version of myself. As my awareness and understanding of life grows I see all my components and outlets of art improving as well, they parallel. So I would encourage anyone to be very self aware, critical, proactive, and disciplined to see successes in their art from and human form. In order to give perception it’s good to be knowledgeable about how you are perceived so awareness is key. From there just be the best you can be and be as unapologetically yourself as possible. Everyone wants to stand out, in order to stand out you must be unique, and the easiest way to be different than EVERYBODY ELSE is by being the most authentic version of yourself.
