We recently connected with Sara Kerns and have shared our conversation below.
Sara , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
As far as social media goes, I manage my own, I am a firm believer that you need to have one on one communications with your clients. I like getting to know my clients and I want them to know that I am here anytime they need to talk, or ask questions about my business. I don’t want other people answering for me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m originally from Albania, but moved to Virginia with my family when I was 10 years old. I am a mama of 2 kiddos and I am happily married to my high school sweetheart who has been my greatest cheerleader in this business.
My photography journey started when I became a stay at home mom. I wanted to capture every second, every moment and every day with my kids.
Their craziness and laughter mixed with the unknown of what was coming next — I wanted to freeze those moments and keep them forever because let’s face it, babies don’t keep.
That’s when I picked up my camera and started capturing the sweetest moments in my life.
As the kids got older, I loved reflecting back on those memories. I began taking photos for other families and it truly sparked my soul on fire. I knew I had found a job that I absolutely LOVED.
The greatest legacy we can give our children is happy memories. As a photographer, I do my best to deliver those memories. I want to tell your story through my lens.
When you look back on those photos I want you to think of all the fun little moments that happened during that time. Even if those moments were pure chaos – which, let’s be honest, life is most of the time – they make for some of the most beautiful memories. My love for this art has led me to meet some of the most wonderful people in this world.
People who have not only become my clients, but my friends. I am honored to have been able to capture so many special memories and can’t wait to help freeze some of your favorite moments in time.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social Media can be very scary when you first start out as a new business. It can get very intimidating and scary. My biggest advice is don’t be scared!!! Go for it. Treat your social media as your portfolio. Put out there what you want people to see and what you want them to love about you and your business. Followers will come I promise. I also recommend having more than one social media platform. For example if Instagram goes down, where would you market your business? Google is another great way to market your business and having a website is a MUST HAVE.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Word by mouth!!! People and your clients are the best resources. If you deliver a great product you will receive great customer service.
