We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lindsay Legrand. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lindsay below.
Alright, Lindsay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
Asking friends and family to support your business can be a tricky balance. On one hand, they often want to help and might be your biggest cheerleaders. On the other, it can lead to awkwardness if things don’t go as planned. It’s important to approach it more as an invitation than a demand. Where I draw the line is when it starts feeling like pressure. If someone isn’t interested or can’t support in ways needed, that’s completely okay. I’d rather maintain the relationship than risk putting them in an uncomfortable position.
Often times with family and friends, I don’t like to charge for my services. However, I have seen the value in the support they return with marketing on social media and spreading the word to their guests about my services, and it can actually be much more rewarding than a financial transaction.
Overall, it’s about mutual respect and understanding. If you can keep that balance, it can be a positive experience for everyone involved!
Lindsay, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those that don’t know me, I’m Lindsay M. Legrand, creator of LML Party Planning. Probably not hard to figure out how I came up with the name of the business. I’ve been passionate about creating unforgettable experiences that bring people together. My journey into the party planning industry began when I was organizing events for friends and family. I realized how much joy I found in crafting unique themes, coordinating details, and seeing everyone come together to celebrate. This love for event planning led me to pursue it as a full-time career.
At LML, I specialize in planning a wide range of events, from intimate birthday parties to large corporate gatherings. My services include everything from venue selection and decor design to coordinating catering and entertainment. What sets me apart is my commitment to personalization. I believe every event should reflect the host’s personality and vision. I take the time to really understand my clients’ needs and preferences, ensuring that each detail is tailored specifically for them.
One of the biggest problems I solve for my clients is the overwhelming nature of event planning. It can be stressful to juggle all the details while trying to enjoy the process. My goal is to alleviate that stress, allowing them to focus on what matters most, celebrating with their loved ones or colleagues!
I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built along the way! Many of my clients have become friends, and I cherish the trust they place in me to bring their visions to life. I also take pride in my ability to think outside the box. I love coming up with innovative ideas that surprise and delight.
For potential clients, I want them to know that my approach is rooted in creativity and collaboration. I’m dedicated to making every event not just a gathering but a memorable experience. I believe in the power of celebration and how it strengthens connections, and I’m here to make that happen seamlessly.
Whether you’re planning a milestone birthday, a holiday party, or a corporate gathering, I’m excited to help you create something special that your guests will talk about for years to come!
Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the most pivotal moments in my life was when I decided to leave my stable job to pursue my passion for party planning. I had been working for the same company for 10 years, and while I appreciated the experience, I felt unfulfilled. I often found myself daydreaming about owning my own business and working for myself as well as the events I could create and the joy I could bring to people through celebrations.
After months of contemplation, I decided to take the leap before I was fully ready. It wasn’t easy, leaving a steady paycheck and venturing into the unknown. It felt daunting, but I was driven by a desire to build something of my own and create memorable experiences for others.
The real pivot came during my first few months of running my business. I had envisioned launching with large events, but as I started reaching out to potential clients, I realized there was more demand for smaller events and I knew I had to get my name out there. Instead of clinging to my original plan, I pivoted to focus on those smaller events, and with providing services of my second love, baking! I began offering more treats for events so I could spread the word of the newly launched LML Party Planning. I quickly gained traction in my community, and what started as a challenge turned into an incredible opportunity for growth, launching LML Party Planning.
Reflecting on that time, I’m proud of my decision to pivot and how it helped me to build a successful party planning business. It reinforced the idea that sometimes the best opportunities come from being open to change and willing to adapt. This lesson continues to guide me as I navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My journey began with BabyBird Bakery, which started as a side hustle fueled by my love for baking and creating. I would whip up custom cakes and treats for friends and family, and their excitement for my creations was incredibly encouraging. It expanded into full dessert table decor, into planning entire events. Before I knew it, word spread, and I began receiving requests for special occasions like birthdays and corporate events.
Initially, I managed BabyBird Bakery alongside my full-time accounting job. Balancing both was challenging, but I found immense joy in crafting delicious baked goods that brought people together. It was during this time that I realized my passion for event planning blossomed as well. Each order wasn’t just about the cake, it involved understanding the theme, colors, and overall feel of the event. I started incorporating simple decorations and planning elements into my baking projects. Then, LML was born!
As demand grew, I faced a critical decision. I could either continue juggling both my job and BabyBird Bakery or take the leap and fully commit to my passion of event planning. After careful consideration and a lot of encouragement from my family and friends, I decided to take that leap. I transitioned from baking as a side hustle to launching a full-fledged party planning business that integrated my love for both baking and event coordination.
Today, I’m proud to say that my business has grown beyond just baked goods. I now specialize in creating tailored events that are unforgettable experiences for my clients, complete with delicious treats that I still personally bake on occasion. Each event is a reflection of my clients’ stories, and I love being able to bring their visions to life!
Looking back, the journey from BabyBird Bakery to a full-time party planning business has been both challenging and rewarding. It taught me the importance of following my passions and being open to the evolving needs of my clients and my family as I juggle working full-time and raising my two littles. This new venture has given me the flexibility to be available to both my family and my clients. I’m excited for what’s ahead and grateful for every step that has brought me here!
