Alright, Karla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Hi there! I’m Karla, and I’m excited to share a bit of my journey with you. Like many of us, I’ve faced my share of challenges as a mom, professional & individual, navigating the tumultuous waters of high-functioning burnout and trauma. But through this journey, I’ve discovered the transformative power of understanding and healing, which has shaped not only my life but also my personal & professional path.
My passion lies in helping others optimize their lives and performances, drawing from my expertise in biomarker-supported care, trauma & resilience methods and clinical systems development. I believe that healing is a holistic process, and I strive to integrate science and empathy in my work. My unique background has given me a rich tapestry of experiences, and it’s these experiences that fuel my desire to support others on their own journeys.
In my personal life, I find joy in connecting with nature, exploring new ideas, and fostering meaningful relationships. I’m a firm believer that growth often comes from our most challenging moments, and I’m here to help others embrace their own transformations. Educating others on navigating the complexities of life and emerge stronger, more resilient, and ready to thrive.
Karla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began my career in the vibrant world of high-end culinary arts, working in hotels & restaurants all over Miami Beach until becoming an Executive Sous Chef. The demands of this high-pressure environment taught me precision and creativity, but I felt a growing disconnect between my success and my true calling.
A profound personal shift came when I became a mother and faced heartbreaking loss in my family. This experience prompted a reevaluation of my values and led me to transition from the culinary world to behavioral health, as I sought a path of healing and support for others.
To equip myself for this new direction, I pursued a Bachelor’s in Human Resources Management, followed by a Master’s in Psychology and a Post-Master’s in Trauma Counseling. My specialization developed around high-functioning burnout and biomarker-supported care, particularly concerning hormone, adrenal dysfunction & nutrition. By identifying insults to biological terrain, I can help others lean into information their body is giving them to reach optimal cognitive & emotional functioning. My work in clinical systems development and performance optimization has allowed me to create strategies for individuals & organizations alike. I’m happiest when I educate others on being able to find psychological and physiological congruence.
My professional experience includes crisis intervention in primary mental health, substance use & eating disorders. I’ve worked in all levels of care in behavioral healthcare facilities, giving me a unique perspective on the challenges faced in high-stress environments. This diverse background has equipped me to support individuals in transitioning from high-pressure lifestyles to more balanced, fulfilling lives.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One crucial lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that constant activity equated to productivity. In high-stress environments, I often chased efficiency and success, neglecting my need for stillness. It wasn’t until I began to prioritize intentional moments of stillness that I truly connected with my inner self and learned to manage the high-functioning burnout that had become a part of my life.
By paying closer attention to my nervous system, I realized it often kept me tethered to the past, alerting me to stress signals that I used to ignore. Now, instead of pushing through these feelings, I take time to assess my mental and physical state, allowing for better decisions about my well-being and work-life balance.
This shift required a conscious effort to resist the cultural push for constant productivity. By integrating dedicated times for reflection and mindfulness into my routine, I’ve cultivated a discipline of stillness that enhances my self-awareness, effectiveness, and resilience.
Any advice for managing a team?
To effectively manage a team and maintain high morale, prioritize accountability and transparency while keeping your values and mission at the forefront, even above profits. When you create a stable internal culture grounded in trust, team members feel valued and supported. This fosters confidence in leadership and cultivates a positive environment. When your team is aligned with a shared purpose, positive outcomes and profits will follow naturally. Remember, a strong culture is the foundation for sustained morale and success.
