We were lucky to catch up with David Jarvis recently and have shared our conversation below.
David, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My project, X610chil, has often been classified as “existential EDM”. I view life as vast and esoteric, and I enjoy expressing these thoughts through lengthy, psyche-provoking rhythms.
These reflections aren’t just a window into the mind, but they also serve to set the tone for each subsequent release, which delve into the darker aspects of human nature and the moral ambiguities that lie at the heart of this story. Despite this bleak outlook, X610chil is driven by a need to uncover the truth, even at great personal cost.
David, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a former metalhead with a dark and complex past, my music is a deeply introspective and philosophical monolith, and I feel my worldview is shaped by a profound sense of existential despair defined by a sharp intellect, a meticulous approach to sound invention, and a hauntingly ethereal outlook on life.
Throughout this career, my partnership with others have really formed the emotional and narrative backbone of the sound. These relationships are usually fraught with tension. I’ve noticed my detached, sometimes aloof demeanor can potentially contrast sharply with the more conventional and emotional approach that my collaborators take to the music. But it is this dynamic that makes each partnership so compelling. These insights and unconventional methods can sometimes lead to breakthroughs in the body and the mind.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My upcoming album/short film, TAKING DRUGS IN A CHEAP ROOM IN A STRANGE CITY, which was recorded by Chuck Redding at Boltneck Studio in Fort Worth, and is due out on Halloween, can best be described as profoundly idiosyncratic and so lucid in its oddity that any attempt to describe and explain it would be misleading.
But for all its blithe disregard of the laws of sound dynamics and narrative coherence, this third album/short film strikes as a perfectly realistic fever dream. The album’s loose connection of events and misleading narratives are appropriate for its themes, but too bound up with memories, fantasies, projections and misperceptions to conform to a conventional, linear structure. One must capitulate to fully understand.
X610chil has released three previous albums. NOIRE ONEIRIC (2023) was also recorded at Boltneck Studio by Chuck Reddin, X610CHIL PRESENTS ESCAPE FROM THE DREAM SYSTEM (2023) and FREERIDER (2024) were both recorded at Element Sound by O.Z.
Beyond the album output, through X610chil, I’ve also released 39 non-album singles, 17 music videos & 2 short films, as well as soundtrack work on projects by Always Evolving Productions and Espooky Productions.
So, I guess the goal is to have a giant discography of mammoth proportions.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
For me, X610chil has been a project of profound depth, with the experiences and beliefs that can challenge the viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about existence, morality, and the nature of reality. I feel like my journey is not just about solving a puzzle, but also about grappling with the darkness within myself and the world around me, and with that, bringing a mesmerizing intensity to a wave that has become the existential sound—a man searching for meaning in a world that offers none.
