Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mike James. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mike, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I am a risk taker that is for sure. My ambition is what got me here 3,000 miles away from where i was born and raised. My biggest risk was coming to Los Angeles to pursue my dream in music and entertainment. I started off as just another kid who loved to make music and write songs about my experiences in life. While all my friends where going off to college and starting families i always wanted more then just that simple basic dream. My first time moving to Los Angeles was in 2011 i was only 21 at the time driving a cross the country with my friends. I call it my trail run because i only lasted a year before i got homesick and lost my vision of why i came there in the first place.
Skip past another 5 years later college and a few dead end jobs in between i just couldn’t get California out of my head i had to return. So in 2017 i packed up my car for the second time and made the move back for good. This time i had my mind set out to just make it on my own and never look back and that’s what i did.

Mike, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When i moved back to Los Angeles i ended up staying in what is called a Co-living house in Korea town. So for anyone who is not familiar with the Co-living living situation its when you have to share a room and house with other roommates it could be co-ed or not but think Hostel but long term. I did this type of living for 2 years before i was offered the opportunity to manage and start my own Co-living house. Now here i am 6 years later successfully operating my affordable housing business in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
The best advice i have for managing is always give people opportunities and show people that you care. It’s not always about making money and that you able to give back in some type of way. I always tell people California is the land of opportunity. I was blessed with the opportunity to start my own business something that i never even thought was possible or imagined doing. All you have to do is put your self in the right position, timing and around the right people.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was a kid who didn’t come from a whole lot of opportunity, money or guidance. I had to figure everything out on my own and make all the mistakes to get where I’m at now. My passion for music is what got me to where i am now and for that i am grateful.
