We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marosi White. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marosi below.
Alright, Marosi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
Some of the biggest trends I am seeing in the Interior Design Industry are:
Use of bold color – Traditionally, bold colors have often been associated with being used as an accent; on a wall or a specific architectural or building element such as a fireplace, or front door, but now, bold colors are showing up on Appliances, Plumbing Fixtures, Cabinetry, Case goods items, Furnishings, Hard Surface Finishes and Lighting. The light, bright and airy look has been with us for some time now, and for some, this will always be the ‘go to’ aesthetic, but it is so refreshing to see richer tones, and moodier colors being used in interior spaces in many more creative ways.
The industry is leaning back into the use of natural materials such as Marble, Granite, Limestone and Quartzite because of their inherent unique characteristics and beauty. Quartz has been the popular material of choice for the past few years, but natural stones are making a comeback. There is also a great attraction and broad appeal to the versatility of artisan-made or artisan-textured finishes in tiles, flooring, decorative accessories, and wall textures. Bold and unique designs in wallcoverings and wallpaper products, and their ease of application has really allowed for spaces to be truly personalized.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I jumped into the journey of entrepreneurship without any prior experience of running a business. The idea of establishing my own Design Studio felt natural to me, and I had all the confidence to do so, but I also knew that I would be figuring things out along the way, and I was willing to take the risk. When I moved to this country, I knew that I had to be resourceful and open minded. At the core of it all was communication and building relationships. The resources that I wish I knew when I first established Accent Design and Interiors were;
Business Coaching and Mentorship – The idea that I would figure things out as I go has only taken me so far. I have come to understand the importance of surrounding myself with peer mentors and investing in business coaching services.
Business Financing – Access to business financing has become a vital resource as it has allowed me to invest even more in the efforts necessary to grow my business. I have close relationships with my business banker, with whom I regularly meet, to discuss business goals and gain information on additional financing opportunities available to small business owners.
Legal Counsel – Setting up our Designer Proposal Agreement, Standard Operating Procedures and Project Management Systems has taken time. As the breadth of our work continues to grow its ever so important to make sure that we are in good standing, legally, and remain to be contractually protected.
Skilled Support Team – A skilled support team takes time to develop, but it is ever so important, especially during the early years of establishing a business. The term here is “skilled”. As a former educator, I have been able to leverage on the talents and skills of former colleagues and students from the college, as well as other industry experts in establishing a business and a brand that is unique and authentic.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Over 90% of our business comes from referrals, whether it is from our former Clients, Our trade and vendor partners, or even fellow Interior Designers. Our Design community, here in Sacramento is very supportive and we feel that there is plenty of work to go around, and often than not, we get design work from other fellow Interior Designers.
