We recently connected with Melissa Medina and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful projects are the ones that I create for my clients/friends.
We grow up in a world of compliance and general characterization.
Art offers physical manifestation of our imaginations. So to have a custom made item that is tailored to you is a feeling of accomplishment.
An artist pours themselves into their work, and the best we can hope for is the appreciation of their art.
In turn, we have individuals that carry a special bond with their manifested desire.
Melissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
A short story of who I am, I grew up as an only child that spent most if the time indoors. I have always been into the arts since I was a child.
The internet was not widely used in the early 90s so i have to use my imagination. Then influences from my travels growing up.
What inspired me to draw was watching Sailor Moon as a kid and i was a huge fan.
So I used to customize my own clothing with tulip fabric paint and paint my room walls. I really enjoyed it because not only the attention but i know i have created something i love and it’s one of a kind.
Customized art work that you can wear brings exclusivity. No one can touch you, lol.
So that is what I provide to my clients.
Currently, we have seen more availability in range when it comes to art and fashion. You can have it handmade or printed. However there’s something different when it’s handmade.
Especially custom designs that no one else has. That’s the goal of my brand, to get you feeling like the main character. You look good, you feel good, you do good.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn perfectionism.
Perfection kills creativity. There’s so many ways to produce something that we have to find our own alchemy, formula, to really bring out the desired result. Sometimes even when you have to take a risk. As the saying goes, fortune favors the brave.
How brave it is to be different? The way you speak, think and dress?
Trends is cool but what can you contribute that makes a statement?
That is my train of thought.
Imperfections add an edge to what you do.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
To support artists and creatives can be something as simple as sharing their work. Or liking their work. Or perhaps purchasing something.
Encouragement goes a long way. And for free. Life is really random sometimes and anything can happen.
