We recently connected with Jake Obermiller and have shared our conversation below.
Jake, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Personally, I don’t think any one path is the “correct” path for all artists. I believe every artist has to find their spark in their own way and in whatever time suits them as a person!
I think we, as a society, often look at older artists as being past the prime of their creative abilities; but, in my experience, i’ve found that creativity is ageless. It doesn’t have a stiff back to hold you from achieving what you strive toward. Sure, being a 4 year old in violin lessons will give you an upper hand when it comes to proficiency, but I find that art (music especially) is about much more than “coloring inside the lines.”
I think we should allow ourselves to be a medium of whatever artistic expression comes to us, at our own pace. Burning yourself out at a young age, or even just an age before you have developed your own personal interests, could prove to be a much more negative outcome than positive!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hey guys!
My name is Jake Obermiller and I have been an independent artist for approximately 11 years now in a wide range of genres from Alternative Rock to Hip Hop to Electronic under various artist names, but currently focused on my passion project “subtitles.” my Pop Punk/Grunge/Midwestern Emo style band!
I wouldn’t even consider myself to be “in the industry” quite yet, but I’m very proud of the achievements i’ve gained along the way. I’ve played many shows across the multiple genres and in multiple states and met some amazing people who have helped me to get to where I am as an artist today.
I’m most proud of the band that I’ve been building up for the past nearly two years with my drummer, Alexandre Di Pasquale, named “subtitles.” and specifically, the release of our debut song in August titled “Floating Down.”
This is a big step for me as this was the first full production song that i’ve ever had released and it came out to be better than I could have ever asked for, so a quick shout out to Jojo Centineo and Andrew Stephenson on the back end! We’re very excited to say we’re in the works of our second song and you can expect that to come out mid-late December!
We like to think that our authentic approach to the music and genuine passion for what we do is a nice breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale industry, and we hope to spread a grassroots movement to affect the lives of others across the world!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Yes! Our band “subtitles.” is very clearly a passionate project for us, and here’s why.
Alexandre (Drummer) and I (Singer/Songwriter) have been communicating strictly via Instagram and Skype calls for two years to grow this band. Alex lives in the South of France and I live in Southern California, causing not only a lack of ability for in person projects and sessions, but also time change issues.
A majority of our sessions have typically been from 11 PM – 3 AM my time (8 AM – 12 PM his time). That makes for late nights and early mornings on both sides of the clock, especially considering we both still work full time jobs with part time’s on the side! It’s an untraditional method, but I genuinely feel as if we are creating something that is supposed to be made. I’m also very grateful to have an amazing partner in Alex, he is truly as professional as can be and such a pleasure to call a close friend and bandmate!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The easy answer would be to say getting compliments from people on how good your project is.
I, however, would argue that the moment that you (the artist) yourself are able to feel the emotion being pulled from you and placed in whatever medium of art you are working through. My art is, selfishly, my free therapy. My goal with releasing my own personal therapy is to hopefully reach someone else who can resonate and touch them in a way that moves their body without physicality. When the hairs on you arms stand up at the sound of an orchestra, when your legs tingle at the touch of a breeze…
These are the things that I strive to share with people through my music and when I’m able to do that, that is the reward.
