We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Che Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Che below.
Hi Che , thanks for joining us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me. WOW. What a question. I’m fortunate enough to say that over the years, generally speaking most people have been kind enough to forgive me for things I’ve done or things I’ve said in the heat of the moment. Friends, family, work colleges and employers have had the kindness to hold space for me and hear my apology you know that’s something that I do not take for granted.
But I know in my heart the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me would be when my father came to see me when I was living in another city and not doing so well. I was partying pretty hard and not sleeping very much, some nights not at all. It got out of control and I had completely lost my mind. My Godfather had contacted my Dad because he noticed something was up. My father flew down immediately and it was evidently clear I wasn’t doing well at all.
He didn’t leave until I was better and when it was evidently clear that, that was going to take a while. We ended up driving back nine hours to my home town together. It was a long drive but one that needed to happen. Those series of actions by my father was the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started persuing my acting dream in the summer holidays in Australia when I was 14. I’d been thinking about doing acting for at least 1 and a half years before and had made 2 short films in that 1 and a half years prior. I was still very insecure of what my friends might think if I had told them I wanted to be an actor. It wasn’t really something that was considered cool or dope. But never the less I was grateful to have one friend Yoav who wanted to do the class with me. We rocked up to this two day work shop and I met the most amazing teacher Natalie Richards.
I ended up studying with her for 2 years in the school term outside of school classes. And I would definitely say that her passion in how she taught and how she inspired all of her students is a massive reason why I still do this. Because she ignited that Acting spark in me. And because of her I felt I could actually do this.
Now, many years later I’m in Vancouver, Canada. Still with just as much acting passion and acting spark. I’m still just as hungry and just as eager as that insecure 14 year old kid who walked into his first acting class in the summer of 2016.
I’m proud of the work that I’ve done that has provided an escape for people and especially in the comedic pieces I’ve done. I love it when people laugh. I want to continue to provide that for people and I believe the best art educates, inspires and entertains.
Ultimately, it’s about me doing the work so that it becomes what the work can do for other people.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would say the main Goal or mission driving my creative journey is firstly that I love to do it. The work gives me great joy. I love the doing of Acting. And secondly that I want to inspire people to live their best life. If I can make someone laugh it may cheer them up and then they may be in a better mood to do something about their situation.
I know coming home after high school was real tough for me but if I could turn on a Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler movie or even watch The Flash or Arrow it made my life better and made me feel that maybe one day I could create something that would bring people joy too. As these shows and movies had done for me.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I’ve found that the most rewarding thing about being an artist is catching up or seeing people who I haven’t seen in a long time and when they ask what I’ve been up to. Telling them that I’m pursing my acting dream. Their faces usually light up and they usually say something like “You’re still doing that, that’s awesome”.
I think it excites people to see that there’s someone out there who’s giving it a red hot crack.
I know that when friends see me following my dreams it can inspire them to follow there’s. And that excites me when I see someone else following their dreams too.
