We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alicia Samuel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alicia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
One of the most transformative leaders in my life was Linda Brown, the Regional Practice Manager at a top hospital in Philadelphia. On my first day as a temp, she asked me for my observations. After just a few hours, I had already jotted down notes on patient flow issues, inappropriate conversations among staff, and a lack of onboarding for medical assistants. I came prepared with solutions, and Linda was impressed. Right there, she offered me a full-time position and asked me to help develop a multi-million-dollar multi-specialty practice. I quickly became the go-to person for policies, procedures, and creating an onboarding manual that would later be implemented across 17 practices.
Linda’s mentorship was game-changing. She didn’t just give me tasks; she introduced me to boardrooms, brought me into meetings with hospital administration, and allowed me to cover for her when she was away. The exposure she gave me completely elevated my career. I went from being a medical assistant to a healthcare consultant and practice manager. Linda showed me what it means to be a leader—someone who sees potential, nurtures it, and creates opportunities for others to thrive. That experience is why I’m so passionate about empowering others in my own work today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Absolutely! My name is Alicia Samuel, and I am known as the The Medical Assistant Expert. After working as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) for over 21 years, I took my passion for empowering others and built a personal brand dedicated to helping medical assistants and healthcare professionals grow in their careers and even transition into entrepreneurship.
My journey started when I realized there was a gap in career development for medical assistants. Many of us feel stuck in our roles, unsure of how to advance, and I wanted to change that. That’s why I focus on personal branding and professional development. I offer a variety of services, including coaching programs like From Scrubs to Success, a 30-day course to help healthcare professionals build personal brands that elevate their careers or start their own businesses. I also created Becoming Her, a 30-day self-paced course that walks professionals through starting a diagnostic lab or drug testing business.
What sets me apart is my holistic approach. I don’t just focus on the technical skills; I aim to empower my clients to build something meaningful for themselves, whether that’s career growth or entrepreneurship. I’ve walked this path myself, from being a single mother trying to make ends meet to becoming a leader in my field. Now, I’m paying it forward by helping others take control of their futures.
What I’m most proud of is the community I’ve built through The MA Moguls™️, a career network for medical assistants. It’s a space where we connect, grow, and uplift one another. My clients know they are more than just healthcare workers—they are leaders, entrepreneurs, and visionaries. I want my followers, fans, and potential clients to know that my brand is here to inspire, guide, and empower. Whether you’re looking to level up your career or build something from the ground up, empowering medical assistants is what I do! Let’s connect and brand your way to success.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What really helped me build my reputation as The Medical Assistant Expert is my commitment to solving the real challenges that medical assistants face. I’ve been where they are—feeling stuck, overlooked, and unsure of how to move forward. By focusing on personal branding, career growth, and entrepreneurship, I’ve been able to connect with my audience on a deeper level. I offer practical tools like my From Scrubs to Success program and my Becoming Her course, which guide healthcare professionals in leveling up their careers or launching their own businesses.
Another key factor has been my transparency and willingness to share my own journey—both the wins and the struggles. My audience knows that I’m not just speaking from a place of theory but from real experience. The MA Moguls™️ network has also been instrumental in building a community that feels supported and empowered.
Ultimately, I built my reputation by being a voice of guidance and support, helping others see that their potential is limitless with the right mindset and resources.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
What helped me build my reputation as The Medical Assistant Expert was my ability to see and address the gaps that medical assistants face in their careers. I didn’t just offer advice—I provided solutions and real tools, like my From Scrubs to Success program, that gave healthcare professionals actionable steps to grow.
One story that illustrates my resilience was when I created an onboarding manual for medical assistants while working at a top hospital. I recognized the inefficiencies in their processes and, despite being new, I built a system that was later implemented across 17 outpatient practices. This experience taught me that when you see a problem, it’s an opportunity to step up and lead. That mindset carried me forward, allowing me to build a brand known for taking real steps to empower others.
Resilience isn’t just about overcoming—it’s about finding solutions even when the path isn’t clear.
