We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mary Catherine Poe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mary Catherine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Elevated Living Company was created in order to bring a new meaning to the term “home”. My favorite thing about design at Elevated Living is the people we design for. I believe design is so much more than fabrics and furniture. I want to create spaces that evoke memories and stories which allow you to feel at peace in your environment. My goal is to create a space for you to celebrate every aspect of life, from small moments to big ones and reach beyond just a pretty aesthetic to curate feelings and emotion in your space. Your home is your haven, your safe space, and I strive to show this in every element I create. I know that life is beautiful and unique, and I want this to reflect in your home. Trendy designs come and go every day, but timeless and classic interiors last forever. This is what elevating a home means to me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am a southern born and raised designer who studied Interior Design at the University of Alabama. I have a timeless take on the design industry and have a passion for mixing the old with the new. I grew up with a family who taught me the importance of timeless interiors from the very beginning. Coming from a large and close-knit family meant having spaces where everyone could come together and make memories. Some of my fondest memories take place in the spaces that made holidays, birthdays and any celebration feel like home to me. Trends come and go, but I find that mixing classic design elements with new ones creates a space that will remain beautiful for years to come. I love creating relaxed yet elegant spaces where family and friends can gather to celebrate all of life’s moments. Design is my outlet to thoughtfully compose spaces that ensure comfortable and unforgettable memories.
I created Elevated Living with hopes to share the importance of home with you and allow people to have spaces that elevate their life in every way. I provide residential design services from exterior to interior in all phases of new construction or renovation. I currently reside in Austin, Texas with my husband and Labrador Retriever, Rosie. My work can be seen in homes across the south from Florida to Texas. I travel near and far for design projects and enjoy time spent at the beach and in my hometown of Fairhope, Alabama. Design is a passion of mine and I hope to share that with every client I work with.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for me has been investing in myself and my business. Finding a creative mind that understood my passion and could put that into marketing material for me that will catch the attention of any eye has made such a difference in my business. I always assumed that being a small business owner meant that I needed to wear all of the hats in my business. I spent time speaking with my peers and the people that inspire me, and they encouraged me to invest in myself and do what it takes to get my name out there and do what I love. Sometimes when you take on many different roles for your business, it is easy to overlook thinks and put them to the side for another time. I knew my first order of business in establishing myself to people other than friends and family would be to create a place that showcases my work and tells my story, and I knew I needed someone to help me bring my brand vision to life. When I found a graphic designer that took the time to learn my style, my passion and my vision for my brand, website and marketing material, I knew that this was going to do wonders for my business. I used Caroline Hereen Creative for this and the increase in clientele and business I have seen since investing in my brand has made such an impact. I will always be thankful I took the time to grow my brand in other ways than just bringing my designs to life. Take the time to find someone that understands and respects your vision, it will be worth it in the end.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building a reputation in the design industry is just as much about relationships as it is the actual design work. In my opinion, finding a designer that pays attention to detail, knows the meaning of timeless design and is not afraid to take risks to create beautiful spaces is important, but finding a designer that can build a relationship with you and take time to understand your wants and needs is even more important. I believe this because design is ever changing. There are trends and there are classic design elements, but the root of design is functionality. To ensure a space not only looks beautiful but functions with your everyday life and grows with you over time takes patience and attention. I try to establish a relationship with each of my clients to really understand what they need from my work, and in hopes that our relationship carries with them and onto their family and friends as well.
