Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Schawana Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Schawana, thanks for joining us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?

Running a business I not as easy as many makes it seem and to this day I still have a lot of learning and growing to do. When I first started Tressed And Blessed it would take weeks to get a sale I have put my business on pause many times and each time I came back it was better than the last. I put my business on pause to rethink, gather information and come up with creative marketing. Doing this always help me come back better than the last. It’s not a goal to keep pause and restarting but if your someone like me who has a million in one things going on it could be hard o stay focus on one. Today my business is has sold out multiple times and Yhis is just the beginning.

Schawana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

When it comes to beauty, we as women deserve the BEST! Here at Tressed and Blessed we offer affordable, long lasting cosmetic, and luxurious hair extensions. As a child I have always enjoyed makeup, trying different hairstyles and just looking like a Princess. I knew that one day I would love to introduce the world to my very own beauty brand! Now that I’m older and have learn a lot I have so much in store for my customers and future customers. My main goal for my company is to provide my customers with the best of the best and I’m just getting started. Tressed and Blessed will be the company that serves you the best looks with thicker, more beautiful-looking eyelashes, gorgeous long-lasting hair extensions and many more flawless beauty products.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

One of the biggest lessons I had to learn is the paper work portion of running a business. No one on Instagram show you the background of running a business. It’s a lot of paper work believe it or not. What I mean by this is you want to make sure your business is structured the correct way. Starting out I didn’t think about this I just started selling lashes and purses. As time passed by and I spoke with other business owner who actually gave me a little information of paper work that’s needed I paused my business and got to business. They tell you an LLC maybe all you need and a cash app card but it’s not. It’s so much more and I had to find out after I spend time and money on inventory. When I should have been making sure the structure of my business was solid.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

There are many different way I now know of about finding a business. Unfortunately, I went (some may say) the hard way. I work two job to fund my business and still felt as if I wasn’t getting anywhere. In the beginning I didn’t know of small business grants, loans and business credit. I started off letting my 2nd job pay for inventory and marketing tools for my business. This route at time made me want to give up but I just keep on going, learning and growing.
