Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Danielle Howle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Danielle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I love being “Artist In residence” for Awendaw Green, in Awendaw, South Carolina. My job is to perform, and also create meaningful musical experiences for my community. I do one-day songwriting workshops, and also host a 3 day artist retreat called Swamp Sessions (on solar power) on the edge of the Francis Marion National Forest. I also create “intentional Writing Trails” where people can walk a nature trail. The trails have 8 stations, each with a writing prompt. People can walk the trail, sit at each station and do the creative writing exercise. This is especially good for songwriters and people who wish to write creatively.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a 30 year touring musician, with 16 albums out. My last album came out in late 2023. We have been touring it for the greater part of 2024. My other musical jobs are building “Intentional Writing Trails, running one-day songwriting workshops for our community, and the surrounding area. I also curate a 3 day songwriter and musician’s retreat on solar power on the edge of the Francis Marion National forest, on private land.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe that music is a language we all speak. Whether it is listening to music and supporting artists this way, or making your own music, sharing in community musical events, adds a richness to people’s lives.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I learned the lesson that most working artists learn. How do I take my skill-set, develop it into something monetarily sustainable. I diversified my artistic income by developing my ability to give workshops to people interested in songwriting. I believe every person has a story to tell. Helping people find hte confidence to tell their stories is not only a way to merge art and commerce, but a rewarding vocational activity as well.
