We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cam Macneille a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cam, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I came up with the name Sunbird back in 2019 when I knew I wanted to have a space of my own! I was brainstorming with my co stylist Koral (@koloredxkoral), who works with me now. We were thinking bright like the sun and free like a bird! So naturally, we ended up with Sunbird Salon.

Cam, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I knew from a young age I was always going to be a hairstylist. I went to Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy right after I graduated high school. I secured my first big girl salon job at La Lou Salon in 2018 and my career blossomed from there! I built my clientele up, moved to a rental salon and really focused in on creating a specialty for my business. I moved to taking only new extension clients in 2022 and have practiced my craft of extensions since. I opened my salon studio space (Sunbird Salon) in March of 2023 and have loved every moment!
Nowadays we focus on creating content in our salon & we are also looking for a 3rd hairstylist to join our team at Sunbird Salon! Anyone who is interested can contact our IG page at @sunbirdsalon to inquire.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I unexpectedly pivoted out of the education industry last year. I have a huge passion for extension education, and always will! I would love to get back into education one day, on my own terms. I ended up leaving the industry due to the “mean girl” culture of a big brand I was apart of. It was very competitive and not the way I wanted to represent my business! I would love to create my own education brand one day where we are inclusive and respectful to one another!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Trigger warning* I actually have quite the story about my short lived marriage! I left my ex-husband in 2022 after he ended up being heavily addicted to fentanyl and other drugs. He overdosed a few times where I ended up drawing a line that I would leave if it happened again. As it happened again, I kept to my word & left as I said I would. Through all this craziness, I kept my head high, went to therapy and bounced back stronger than ever!
