We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alison Bunce a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alison, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
The Bunce Bakes mission is to be kind to your body, kind to the Earth. Not only are we eco-conscious – our packaging is made up of compostable and recyclable materials, but we are also community conscious. We partnered with UCLA Health as monthly volunteers by offering baking classes to hospital patients and their families. The Tiverton is a UCLA Health hotel dedicated to hospital patients and their families. Our baking class attendees have told us how much they enjoy and look forward to our classes. We feel honored to be able to add some engaging fun to those whose lives revolve around being in a hospital everyday.
Alison, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m the Founder and CEO of Bunce Bakes, LLC, a gluten, dairy, soy, nut free and organic online bakery – based in Malibu, CA. I also work full time as a UX Designer at Amazon. I love the contrast of these jobs in my day to day. Whether I’m designing emerging tech or building my bakery, I feel challenged in ways I’ve never been and am having a lot of fun.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
There are a lot of creators in my space and I still don’t have a huge following, but I decided to create a marketing experiment and created a mini series, “BUNCE BEACH”. It’s a spoof on Baywatch since I like to watch Baywatch when I bake and we’re a Malibu based bakery. It’s short, sweet, silly and to the point. I will still create baking videos, but I wanted to make something different that played on the Malibu Beach stereotype but also revolve around our product. It’s on our IG @buncebakes and also available on YouTube, https://youtu.be/apUWZ5AA1hs?feature=shared
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
We are a very small and new company and word-of-mouth marketing has been our strongest source of new sales. I go to local events every week and people are getting used to seeing me with my products. I’ve met a lot of people through these event whom have become very valuable word-of-mouth marketers for Bunce Bakes.
