We were lucky to catch up with Frederick Blackman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Frederick , appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Fueled by a passion for health and wellness cultivated during my time behind bars, I envisioned launching a fitness boot camp upon my release in 2016 to chart a positive course. However, upon reentering society, I noticed significant changes in the industry and societal trends. Recognizing people’s deep affection for their pets, I pivoted my business idea towards a niche in dog accessories through an online store. This transformation was inspired by observing the strong bond between individuals and their canine companions, affirming the potential success of this venture. A serendipitous encounter with my girlfriend, Sash, and her dog Kobe deepened my understanding of the invaluable connection between families and their pets. Witnessing the skincare needs of our own pets and drawing on Sash’s expertise as a cosmetic maker, we decided to shift our focus to pet wellness, aligning with my passion. Leveraging her extensive experience and skincare line, Meauxco, we joined forces to establish “The Dog Houze.” What initially began as an accessories and clothing store for pets evolved into a brand prioritizing canine well-being. Together, we conceptualized products centered on enhancing dogs’ health and happiness. This collaboration led to the creation of Paw Butter and Furfume, marking a new chapter in our entrepreneurial journey.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The Dog House was inspired by a passion for health and wellness, combined with the observation of the authentic connections between pets and their owners. It all began with a chance meeting involving my girlfriend and her family dog, who was suffering from a skin condition. With her background in cosmetic chemistry and my enthusiasm for wellness, we developed dog-friendly, small-batch, plant-based products that are safe and effective for addressing a variety of issues. After witnessing the remarkable benefits of our initial product, Paw Butter, for dogs’ paw pads, bald patches, and skin problems, we redefined the vision for The Dog House.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In my younger years, I struggled with direction and goals, which ultimately led to poor decisions and my incarceration. During my time in prison, a transformative moment inspired me to consider a different path. If I could endure five years of isolation while reading and making positive, healthy changes for my mind and body, nothing could hold me back from achieving lifelong transformation. Driven by a passion for health and wellness, I dreamed of launching a fitness boot camp upon my release to set myself on a positive trajectory. However, upon reentering society, I observed significant changes in social trends and a deep affection people had for their pets. This realization prompted me to shift my focus from human health and wellness to the well-being of pets!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first launched The Dog Houze, the emphasis was primarily on drop shipping and a variety of accessories. The lack of control over processing times, lead times, and shipping posed challenges in delivering the level of customer service I aspired to offer. Shifting to small-batch production of pet care hygiene products became the essential pivot that set my business apart and enabled us to provide exceptional customer service.
