We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Keyana Henderson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Keyana below.
Keyana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Taking risks can be terrifying when you don’t know the outcome. I’ve taken a couple of risks to better my life. One example is when I moved 3,000 miles from my hometown. My last year of high school, I was facing homelessness on top of trying to better my business, Keesstylez. I overcame homelessness and was able to graduate high school, which was a huge accomplishment for me. After graduating, building my clientele up, and buying my first car, I decided to make a big move to Seattle, WA for better opportunities. I sold my car, left my friends and family, and moved to Seattle with my cousin, the only person I knew in Seattle. Within days of me moving, a situation happened between my cousin and I, and I became homeless again, but this time in a state where I’m not familiar with anything or anyone. I networked with some good people in Seattle who took me in as family, helped me build my clientele back up, and then I found my own place. After 3 months of living in Seattle, I had a client every day, found a part-time job at Amazon, and also met amazing people along the way. Sometimes a change is not a bad thing! Everything happens for a reason!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My family wasn’t the wealthiest but the female’s in my family always made sure we had what we needed to survive. Growing up I got picked on a lot for my looks & hair ,and most of the time my mom couldn’t afford to get my siblings and I hair did as often as we wanted. My oldest sister knew how to do hair , but most times she only had time to do her hair, so that left me fidgeting with my hair before school so the other kids wouldn’t pick on me. As the years went on I got better at doing hair to where now my friends were asking me to do their hair. Before I was doing services for free until one day my aunt asked me “How much for this style” . Ever since then I’ve been getting paid for my work , and as the years past I started charging my worth and getting paid what I deserve . In 2023 I brought my first car by myself and used it as transportation to get back & forth to my side job as an assistant manger at Hibbetts sports . A couple months later I found a suit to grow my business & build my clientele at Wigsrus plus more. I had build myself & brand up so well that I had a client every other day !!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Something I had to unlearn in order to grow as a person & business owner is to never get too comfortable. I’m the type of person that hates being stagnant and feeling like I’m living the same lifestyle everyday, and sometimes I can be impatient . As a result of having these traits I found myself moving around a lot , like as soon as I start to build myself & clientele up I move states. I’ve learned in order for your business to grow you first have to build a name & clientele for yourself in the current state you are in !

How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve also been into marketing and tech before I even knew what it was and its benefits it has. The best way to build & grow your business is to market consistently on all social media platforms! I would create tutorials of me doing clients hair along with my hair. I would also create flyers & mini memes about Hair that clients can relate too, and I started seeing the results it had on my sales !
