We were lucky to catch up with Ryan Perkins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, thanks for joining us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made?
My best investment is my team. The people are what make All Dry Services of Norfolk what it is. We don’t hire resumes, we hire character, personalities, and work ethics. Approaching team building from this perspective has paid off in many ways. Our quality of work stands out and the relationships we’re building in our community are priceless. Investing in the people who invest in, and promote, our culture and core values is easily the best investment I’ve ever made as a business owner.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in Louisiana, during the 80’s & 90’s. I still hold dear to that old school customer service. I moved to Virginia in 2006 and completed undergrad in 2009. My career was in Government contracting, specifically in the simulation industry,
I’ve always wanted to own a franchise, and saw an opportunity to do so as I returned from a 2-year assignment in Iraq in 2022. I was introduced to the All Dry brand via a consultant and immediately fell in love with it.
We provide the following services – mold remediation, water damage mitigation, trauma & crime scene cleanup, and odor control. This is sometimes a tough job, and can require a strong stomach, but it comes with a great deal of reward and satisfaction. What means the most to me is solving problems that our customers think are insurmountable. The look of relief and gratitude that we get from property owners when we complete a job is indescribable. That look is a great driving force for me.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Again, I must go back to my team. We are so fortunate to have the team that we have out there everyday building our reputation. The customer interaction that is required can sometimes be challenging, because our customers are often-times in a high stress situation by the time they call us. We have a team of knowledgeable, patient, and compassionate people who continually uphold the All Dry standard.
Any advice for managing a team?
My best advice is when you get someone good, you treat them like gold and hold on to them. Maintaining high morale may look different for each individual employee. A great leader first studies their students. If you want to manage or lead someone, it is imperative that you know who they are so that you can best communicate with them.
