Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Owens
Hi Katrina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I never dreamed of being an entrepreneur or business owner, but throughout my corporate career, I often found myself wanting more – I just wasn’t sure what that “more” was.
I was working for a corporate employer when a series of events led me to realize that if I wanted to have the life and career I’ve always dreamed of, I was going to have to trust myself and take a leap I had never imagined. Once I started my business, I thought I would operate as a ‘standard’ freelance consultant or grow an agency. That was until I realized that it wasn’t too late for me to build my own personal brand and start having a really FUN business by using public relations.
Now, I empower personal brands with the real-life public relations tactics that they too, can use to build their dream business. Oh, and that “something more” I was looking for? It was endless opportunity and a relentless belief in myself to achieve everything I’ve ever wanted.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If entrepreneurship was a smooth road, everyone would do it, right?
There have been struggles, and there will continue to be into the future, but it’s less about what those external struggles are, and more about how you manage your mindset behind them.
For me, the biggest challenge is trusting both myself and the process. In even my most sparkly, successful moments, I’ve had negative thoughts try to steal the spotlight, and I realized early on that if I didn’t find a way to manage those thoughts, they were going to be my biggest obstacle moving forward.
Not only investing in mentorship, but taking time to do the actual work on yourself to increase your mental stamina is the key to successful entrepreneurship. I really believe that. Those that stay open to changing their thought patterns and routines are the ones that can navigate the obstacles (that always exist) in a much smoother fashion.
We’ve been impressed with Knockout Directive , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
While Knockout Directive started out as a boutique agency specializing in holistic marketing and public relations strategies for medium-sized businesses, we quickly realized our passion was actually deeply rooted in helping personal brands understand the tactics they need to start creating the BIG businesses they dream of having.
Now, the agency operates on an exclusive, referral-only basis, specializing in brand and publicity management for businesses that align with values like ours, and we offer comprehensive publicity coaching programs for businesses of all sizes. We wholeheartedly believe that it’s never “too early” to start using PR to grow brand awareness and brand authority, and empowering business owners with the tactics they need to start radiating BIG brand energy is what sets our brand apart from other branding and PR firms out there.
Most importantly? We believe that no dream is too big or out of reach. We ensure every single client strategy is designed to achieve the ultimate goals of the business owner, providing tangible action steps to bring their BIG brand dreams to life.
What does success mean to you?
I think I’m still figuring that one out.
I had a mentor recently say to me: “success feels a lot different than you expect.’
It was in a moment where I had seemingly achieved so much in my business, yet I still didn’t feel as though I had done enough or ‘succeeded.’
Right now, I view success as my ability to continuously believe in, and go after my dreams. While not every day feels like the sparkly success I anticipated, if I take a step towards my dreams every day, I AM cultivating my own success, and it’s up to me to recognize and celebrate that.
The caveat here is that the ‘step’ doesn’t have to be action. I realized early on in my business that it’s just as important for me to rest and turn off my brain, which in turn reinvigorates my creativity and energy. So most weeks, if I have the opportunity to turn away from what we traditionally view as ‘work’, and rest or play instead, that really feels like success to me.
