Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Metz
Hi Bianca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Our journey began 6 years ago when we decided to downsize into a tiny home! Six and a half years ago was the launch into why we wanted this shift so badly – I gave birth to our son 6 weeks early. Wanting a more simple life for ourself and our son, being overworked led to my premature birth experience and we never wanted to experience something like this again. Hoping for a simpler life we moved to the forest into a 240 square foot tiny home and never looked back. Over the past 6 years I have worked extensively in the tiny home community in Ontario to help pave the way for legal tiny home living, re-shaping bylaws and providing ideas for inclusive policy. This has led me to be able to build a successful consulting business and national Tiny Home Show!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our road was not as smooth as we would have anticipated. Taking such a huge risk was something we were ready for but things along the way came up. When we initially moved into the tiny house we did not have running water for 3 months, with a 1 year old at home that was tough. Building my business was not easy – a niche community but also a place where new policies are being formed and you don’t necessarily know how these come into play for your clients. The learning curve of understating bylaws and building code was a big one. But I learned how and now I love it! Not generating an income for a few years to influence and change policy was also fairly tough even though we were not paying a mortgage anymore. Another struggle is dealing with companies who are capitalizing on a niche movement and seeing people I coached or cared about being victims of fraud.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Giving Tree Consulting & Tiny Home Show?
My company is called Sustainable Spaces Inc, though which I and the Lead Consultant at The Giving Tree Consulting, and a co-producer of the Tiny Home Show. My consulting work is available to individuals and businesses to help them understand the world of tiny homes. I offer turn key tiny home solutions to those who are looking to downsize or build a tiny home or small dwelling. For businesses I offer 1-1 consulting to help them understand tiny homes and who buys them, and how. I also help companies in business development by assisting with client onboarding processes, visibility strategies and helping them develop turn key tiny home building.
I am most proud that I have been an integral part of a niche and growing industry that helps people get into affordable housing. I am so proud to be able to stand in front of government leaders and policy makers and teach them how tiny homes work, and how they can be accommodated in our affordable housing epidemic. My brand is very transparent, I am authentically living in a tiny home, living this lifestyle, so I am definitely practicing what I preach!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I never read anything to do with business and I probably should – I love fantasy books! Apps I love for business are Mojo for reel development, podcasts I love are Minimalist Living and the Rocky Talky Podcast. I enjoy pop punk and emo music and follow a lot of influencers that keep me wrapped into music I love! I follow a lot of sustainable fashion influencers as well!
