Today we’d like to introduce you to Raynelle Walker
Hi Raynelle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2018, my brother Greg Walker was tragically murdered in his home while his two children were present. Devastated by this loss, I started an organization in 2020 with the support of family and friends called the Beat The Streetz Foundation. Beat The Streetz is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bridging the gap between youth, young adults, and the issue of gun violence. We work hard to spread awareness about gun violence within our community and strive to keep our youth safe.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur is not an easy task, and starting a business is equally challenging. When I first started Beat The Streetz, I didn’t know anything about securing funding or the proper ways of running a nonprofit. I stepped out on faith, driven by a desire to give back to the community. Initially, I relied on the generosity of those who believed in my vision—they would donate or purchase merchandise to help fund the events I organized. Sometimes, finding support within your own community can be a significant barrier, but perseverance and dedication have kept me moving forward. I was grieving really bad. It’s like I was living in a cloud/bubble and didn’t really give myself enough time to heal. Which made me who I am today! The founder and CEO of the Beat The Streetz Foundation. Until this day I still mourn Greg. I just never question God and live by faith. I know he would want something like this to continue his legacy. He loved the youth as well, and had made major changes over his life. Such as refereeing kids basketball games and pouring into our youth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In addition to my work with Beat The Streetz, I am a Student Support Coordinator for the public school district, where I am known for advocating for youth. I am proud to carry on my brother’s legacy, and what sets me apart from others is my personal story. I lost my father to gun violence as well. He was also shot in the head and survived as a vegetable for three years. He then later crossed over. I didn’t grow up with my biological father. I never really knew the trauma and impact it had on me until I got older and realized how much I needed my father more than ever as of today. My brother always looked out for me and protected me when I was growing up until the day he crossed over. I have been deeply impacted by gun violence and trauma, and this experience fuels my passion and commitment to making a difference.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me are my children, my mother and setting good standards for them. I strive to provide a safe and stable home, and I am dedicated to my mental health and health journey. These priorities guide my actions and reinforce my dedication to my community and my family.
