Today we’d like to introduce you to Aphrosoul Lukumipeople
Aphrosoul, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am APHROSOUL LUKUMIPEOPLE, most know me as LUKUMIPEOPLE. I am a DJ, Producer, Community Radio Broadcaster, Sacred Space Curator. I began my journey in 1998, actually long before that in the mid 1980’s doing pause tape re edits. Then fast forward to 1998, I got started in community radio while living in Houston, TX. Then that led to a chance meeting with the legendary DJ Rocky B who was instrumental in my learning the ways of the club DJ. I learned to mix and blend records in a dance club where she was the Resident DJ. Before long I had various DJ Residencies of my own and opening for various artists from the sister duo Les Nubians, soul singer Donnie, international artist Wunmi, soul artist Rahsaan Paterson, soul songstress Amel Larrieux, and a long list of international DJ/Producers. I am also found and cofounder of various gatherings and festivals some of which were founded during my various travels. Continuing my Community Radio roots I host a music broadcast, MOJÙGBÁ RADIO on WPFW 89.3FM and SOLSDANCE on EATON RADIO, both based in Washington, DC. I walk the spiritual of the African Indigenous Ancestors moving in alignment with nature and the natural order of the universe, and it reflects in the music that I play. I am a conduit, a healer, an uplifter, a messenger, of the ancestors through the frequencies of music.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s had its ups and down. I mean not many get it as most are still plugged into the matrix. The comments, “You’re not gonna be able to support yourself as a dj.” Or, “Unless you play what people like or what’s popular you not gonna get booked.” Or one of my personal favorites, “There is no way you gonna make any money playing the music that you play.” Also people just not having faith and believing in you. Also the self proclaimed “Gatekeepers” and their controlling or try to control the narrative to their personal gain. I maintain my focus, keep out of the politics of it all and create my own way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a DJ, Producer, Community Radio Broadcaster, Sacred Space Curator. I am a working touring DJ spinning various forms of music rooted in soul, jazz, funk, rare groove, deep house, techno, world music. I am most known for spinning, mixing, blending deep house music, communicating with people, taking people on a journey through music. What sets me apart from others is the way I play music, infusing ancestral elements, allowing myself to be a conduit, a channel of the ancestral spirits, conveying emotions facilitating healing and uplifting through musical frequencies.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has been the alignment of the right place in time space. Being right where I needed to be at that exact moment. If it is for you it will present itself, just be ready.
