Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanna Hill
Hi Hanna , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been told I had a big personality and was super creative. Those were my affirmations from a young age. But as I grew older, I also wanted to be successful and strong. I wanted my artist’s heart and confidence to do something meaningful in the world.
My dream first took shape as a photographer, a passion I pursued on and off throughout university. In 2015, I finally took it seriously as a business. Starting small, like most photographers do, I eventually grew into one of the most recognizable and award-winning birth photographers in my area. I was immensely proud of my work, both for the mothers I served and the art I created. It was raw, real, and inspiring for so many families navigating the often complicated world of birth and maternity care.
In 2021, our family decided to move abroad, and I had to put my photography business on hold. It was a tough choice but the right one. I needed a more remote career that could move with us over the next 5-10 years, so I wouldn’t have to reacclimate my business each time we relocated or traveled. I began helping a few photographer friends with marketing and design, drawing on my 10+ years of experience. I felt equipped to assist other small businesses with social media, marketing strategy, website design, and branding.
What started as a side hustle became a full reality in 2023 when I fully committed my business to design and marketing, focusing on birth workers and photographers. I had the unique voice and perspective needed to help birth workers articulate the depths of their work and book their calendars.
Now, a few months past my one-year anniversary with my new business, it has been an amazing, purpose-driven success. I am excited to continue empowering working moms, creatives, and those who love birth work but need support with the business side of things.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say my hustler spirit has paved much of the road for me. Of course, no small business journey is smooth, and I have felt the ebbs and flows. My biggest struggles have come with moving so often. Since 2015, our family has relocated and restarted four different times. We moved from Tennessee to Kansas City in 2015, then to North Carolina, and then to England, where we currently are. We’ll be moving back to the U.S. by the end of this year. These life anxieties and changes have been the biggest challenge in my business.
While I can look back with gratitude on the lessons learned through these struggles, like gaining marketing knowledge and hustling to build a reputation, I’ve also had to accept that business growth takes time. I often wished I could have started 10 years ago and be reaping the benefits of working in a well-established, beloved community. However, switching to a fully remote profession has honestly been a long time coming, and I’m glad not to have to worry about that part of things as we move again later this year.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create soul-led websites, brands, and marketing strategies for female entrepreneurs. But I most often work with those who may not always see themselves as entrepreneurs—the small business moms who need a boost of confidence, cohesion, and purpose to start building long-term and sustainable success for their businesses. I have intentionally built my business on a holistic model, so it can feel like a ‘one-stop shop’ for finding that alignment and empowerment for your small business growth.
I have a special heart for birth workers—doulas, midwives, birth centers, and birth photographers—because I was a part of that world for many years. I truly understand the complexity of their businesses and how crucial trust is when weaving together their services.
What sets Hanna Hill Creative apart is my decade of firsthand experience in both the birth and photography worlds, giving me a unique voice and perspective. I understand the nuances and intricacies of the birth community and know how to create content and designs that resonate and connect with intention. My hands-on experience and education enable me to support small businesses in a tangible way.
My projects are intuitive, honest, timely, and deeply rooted in our connection, ensuring that every working relationship feels like a true collaboration. I am most proud of the businesses I’ve helped transform and the women I’ve seen succeed, harnessing their unique power and gifts to grow their businesses.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
The only ‘luck’ I would say I’ve found in business has been finding and marrying my partner. Before him, I didn’t have a clear vision for my work and life, but his support has been a grounding force for many years. While I am an Enneagram 4 who struggles to boil dreams into tangible steps, he is the type-A believer who has always seen my success before I could see it myself. Finding a partner like that was truly lucky. Though he has never been directly involved in the business side of my success, his unwavering support has been foundational.
