Today we’d like to introduce you to Madhu Sahoo
Hi Madhu, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a passionate fashion creative currently based in Florence. I hold a Master’s in Fashion Styling from Polimoda and have over three years of experience in the fashion industry. I have a background in English and French Language and Literature, but later pursued my passion for the industry and moved here.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has been anything but smooth, just like any person chasing their dreams and starting from scratch. But although it has been hard with countless sleepless nights and innumerable crying sessions, it has also been incredibly gratifying. Looking back, I’d say it has made me resilient, which I consider to be a necessary quality in my line of work.
One major struggle has been fitting in— I always felt like an outsider and did things that felt unnatural to me to feel more accepted. But over time, I learned to use it to my advantage. As an individual with a set of skills, experiences and knowledge that are purely mine, focusing on what I have to offer is empowering. And this knowledge helps me be unapologetically myself. Fashion is a diverse field with unique personalities making it so fascinating.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Although styling is what I started with, I’ve been actively freelancing as a makeup artist for about 2 years now — it’s a field I’m very invested in as well. Some of my styling works are published in Quadro and Artells magazine. I also have makeup works published in 17:23, Pap, Artego and Flanelle magazines.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I honestly don’t believe in luck anymore — I think that things find you when the time is right. Let’s say you’ve been struggling to find a job, and a friend of yours secures one. You’d think — ah, they were lucky. And I used to think that way for a long time too, until I realised that sometimes, something more fulfilling was waiting for me. If you start to observe things that happen around you or in your life, you’ll realise that. Things come your way when you’re ready to take them on! Now, this doesn’t mean simply sitting there and waiting for good opportunities to find you, you have to make the effort, put in the work and most importantly, not give up.
