Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Johnson
Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up in New Haven, CT I used to be extremely shy and mostly stayed to myself. Throughout my high school and college years, I started making goals and staying positive to be able to meet my goals. I have always thrived on getting to the next level in life and doing everything that I said I would accomplish. My mom watched over the years, how I graduated and received two degrees and still didn’t get the career job; while my friends were easily getting hired with the same degrees. She noticed that I was discouraged deep down, even though everyday I walked around smiling. Once I started my business in 2022, my mom noticed a change in me that I desperately needed. I became actually happy and finally felt that I had a sense of self-worth. My purpose in life to create handmade products has been keeping me fulfilled.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has had obstacles along the way. When I was going to school for Pre-Med/Biology, I had to take many Biology and Chemistry classes that were difficult. I remember the struggle and how my GPA dropped below the standard and was in danger of losing my financial aid. I had to sit in a meeting with a gentleman and he told me that I wouldn’t become a doctor due to my grades. I was very devastated when I left his office. The main reason I wanted to become an Oncologist is because my father passed away in 2006 from cancer. I lost hope that I would be able to help people with cancer. Although I was let down, it encouraged me to get better grades and never let my GPA dropped again. I was able to do much better, kept my financial aid, and graduated with a B.A. in Biology.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve built a business making candles, room sprays, and body butters. I am very proud of my creativity that I didn’t know I even possessed. My ability to keep finding new ways to become a better person and business woman each day. I take pride in providing quality products and seeing how much customers love what I produce and the scents that I’ve chosen. I am very personable and can talk to anyone, which I feel sets me apart from others. There are many people who own businesses, but some are very reserved or may not seem as friendly. I honestly enjoy all of my customers; we share great laughs and I aim to leave a lasting impression.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I feel that in life it is important to take risks because you never where it can take you. Since I do many local pop-up shops, I consider that a way of risk-taking. It is risk-taking because I have to spend money to have a spot at the location and I never know how much I will actually sell. As a vendor we aim to make more money that we paid for our spot, but at times that may not happen. So, if I don’t make a profit at an event then that’s the risk I took, plus it makes me feels as if I wasted my time. Every event is different, and you never know if it will be enough foot traffic or even if it is a lot of foot traffic what if people don’t purchase from most vendors. Every customer has different pay days, so they may not have money to spend but we can at least get the exposure and pass out business cards. I don’t regret any risk that I took because it helped me over these two years to meet great local business owners, customers, and I gained so much knowledge.
