Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Jacovsky
Hi Lisa , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am an award-winning children’s book author of almost ten books. I love to write and my
favorite thing to do is write about things that I know from my life or my career. It is really
amazing to be able to combine my two passions which are writing with psychology. It allows me
to bring my experience in my career to a medium that interests people and can really help them
understand something such as autism or special needs cats better. Its really special to help a
family understand their child better. Also, so many people have come up to me and said they did
not know that cats could be special needs. Writing allows me to help bring awareness to
something that is not typically shown or talked about in special needs cats. Seeing the surprise
and light come to someone’s face when they see my books about special needs cats is truly
beautiful. I think the most exciting thing for me is the whole publication process. From having the
illustrations made to the layout to seeing the full book put together. It is like Christmas every
time I get an email with an update. It really is amazing to see something I worked on and have a
vision for come to life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If you focus on only your strengths and then are faced with a situation that can required even a
small weakness you are going to be at a disadvantage. My best advice would be balance. Work
on your weaknesses any time an opportunity comes up. But don’t forget to continue to maintain
your strengths. One day those weaknesses are going to become strengths. But we wouldn’t
have those strengths if we didn’t continue to do things that help to maintain them. Life is about
balance and for me balance is something that is important. Finding a balance to working on
yourself and what makes you happy will all you to maintain your strengths but grow your
weaknesses leading to a well rounded human being and life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
This is a great question and honestly I get this every semester from my students. The truth is I
used to absolutely dread public speaking. I used to go beat red in the face from being so
nervous. I still get nervous before a speaking event or work but once I begin I feel much more
comfortable. I think for me experience has been the best way to boost my confidence. When I
was 27 and I started working in the field I did not have a choice and in learning to give a training
to the new hired staff. I think that was a situation I had to learn to move past the nerves. I had to
learn that in order to enjoy my job and move up I had to accept certain things and work to build
my confidence. That was the first time I had to train but it was not the last. As I grew and moved
on to other companies more opportunities came up that would help me grow but also put in
situations that made me nervous due to being out of my comfort zone. But if I learned anything,
its that if I say yes I learn and grow. If I had not said yes I may have stayed in the same place in
my career instead of the incredible place I am in now. For me it is about never saying no, never
taking no for an answer and learning to get out of your comfort zone. When we moved beyond
our comfort zones we build our confidence and self-esteem. That will lead to more opportunities
and better chances to enjoy what you do for a career and work.
How do you think about luck?
Compassion, patience, and the ability to listen. Compassion is important because it allows you
to be kind and open to others. Having this quality can lead to some incredible experiences with
others and learning. I meet new people at every school, fair, event, interview etc I do and
without compassion I would not have half the author friends I do or the base foundation I have
from networking. For me without that I would not have the base I do and the opportunities I have
been given. Patience is needed for growing any type of business, especially as an author. Not
every book is going to succeed or do as well as the previous or next one. You need patience to
grow a business. You also need patience to grow as an author. When I see somesone else
selling more than me I don’t get upset. I get excited and cheer for them and that’s due to
patience. I have patience knowing my books are doing just as well and that I will have similar
opportunities coming soon. The ability to listen. From listening has come so many amazing
things like ideas for some of my most successful books. If I didn’t listen I would not have half the
connections I do either. Sometimes people just want to talk and through that can come
something beautiful for you and your business. Listening is something that can take patience
and compassion. I feel that these three qualities go together and are important when you are a
writer and growing as a person and an artist.
