Today we’d like to introduce you to Magdalena Hess
Hi Magdalena, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved creative designs that tell a story and ones we can connect with. My career began in the jewelry industry; I am a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America, an award-winning jewelry designer, a philanthropist, and the author of my book “The Beauty in All”
I spent most of my career as a creative partner at Jose Hess Design, working alongside my late husband, Jose Hess, a multi-award-winning designer. My journey has taken me around the world, allowing me to gain extensive knowledge about the jewelry industry.
As I move forward with my brands, I’ve also decided to continue the Awards program that was first presented by the American Jewelry Design Council in 2023, by carrying on Jose Hess’s legacy through a non-profit organization I’ve established called the Jose Hess Design Awards.
These awards will recognize and celebrate emerging talent in the fine jewelry industry in America, with our next Awards event planned for 2025 at the JCK Show in Las Vegas. Through these awards and grants, we aim to support up-and-coming fine jewelry designers and foster creativity in the fine jewelry world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always challenges, and yes, I see those as life lessons if you can see them that way. The biggest lesson for me is to strive to remain positive and creative, always with a thankful heart. It’s not always easy, but I believe that embracing positivity and thankfulness fuels inspiration and helps us navigate through life’s challenges with grace. And hopefully, we all arrive in one piece! Laughing out loud.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In addition to jewelry design, I also have an accessory line featuring handbags, sunglasses, and watches with Danbury Mint.
My passion for life, alongside my work in design, has driven me to engage in philanthropic efforts, bringing toys, supplies, and happiness to those in need.
Another aspect of my work that I am particularly proud of is my belief in the power of laughter and sharing positivity.
In 2006, I founded a non-profit called Come Laugh. One of my first events was at the Ronald McDonald House in New York City, where I brought in a comedy group and created a trivia game for resident children undergoing cancer treatments.
Seeing the sparkle in their eyes, and the connection we all felt was truly heartwarming—it was a life-changing moment for me. The love and gratitude I received for something so simple was incredibly rewarding, and it solidified my commitment to spreading happiness wherever I go.
Today, I continue to visit charities in Florida, including the Ronald McDonald House, Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital, women’s shelters, homeless centers, and even essential workers like nurses, doctors, firemen, and police officers. I bring bags of goodies and a spirit of love every holiday season.
What sets me apart is my unwavering belief that laughter is healing and transformative. I love to laugh and share that joy with others, and it constantly reminds me of how blessed we are. No complaining from me!
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to embrace life fully and find the good in every moment. Life makes me happy, and I’m constantly reminded of this whenever I play Bon Jovi’s song *It’s My Life*—it’s my personal anthem. The song is a great reminder to live on your own terms and make the most of every day.
