We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamie Bajgert a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jamie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.

I was technically in business for months before I landed my first real client. I had the website, posted on social a few times, and then just… waited for clients to come rushing in. Spoiler alert: they didn’t. 

Looking back, I should’ve known better as a marketer that things take time! So I joined the local chamber of commerce to put myself out there and meet fellow business owners. And guess what? When they posted about my business on social, boom—I got my first client! I was so pumped to finally have someone to work with and help them grow their business.

I highly recommend joining your local chamber of commerce. It’s a game changer!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’ve been in corporate marketing for 15 years and enjoyed it—there’s something about the mix of creativity and problem-solving that always kept me excited. But when the pandemic hit, I found myself thinking, “Is this it? What else can I do to stretch my skills?” So, I decided to take a course to dive deeper into digital marketing, an area I hadn’t really explored much in my day job.

That course? It also had this whole section on how to start your own business, and something just clicked. I’ve always wanted to help people, and I’ve always loved marketing. The idea of combining those two? I was pumped! That’s how Uniquely You Marketing was born. Now, I get to help business owners grow with personalized marketing strategies that actually work for their business. I LOVE being able to help business owners achieve their goals!

Owning my own business has been so rewarding that I’m now on a mission to help other women do the same. So, I’m working on a new step-by-step program to help women start their own businesses or passion projects. It’s going to be all about finding your side hustle superpower, and I can’t wait to share it!

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.

Yes, I have been lucky enough to turn my side hustle into my full time job today! I started my side hustle about 3 years ago in digital marketing. Like I mentioned, during the pandemic I got antsy and decided to take learn some new skills. Along the way I got the idea to try my hand at my OWN business helping small-medium sized business owners get more leads and sales through multi-channel marketing. Not too long after we were instructed to return to the office. I was not looking forward to my 45 minute each way commute again and having to sit in an open concept (ugh) office all day. I would count down the hours till I could go home and work on my side business. I loved having the creative outlet and autonomy to work on what I wanted.

After I landed my first few clients and my confidence built so did my disdain for my corporate gig. I couldn’t stop getting this feeling that I wanted a complete lifestyle change. I wanted to work on my terms, and where I wanted – not be tied to the office 40 hours a week. I decided to make a complete life change and move to Charleston, South Carolina, quit my corporate job and take my side hustle full-time. Kinda crazy, a big gamble but it has been so worth it. Being able to be my own boss, take mid-day walks on the beach if I want has been completely life changing in the best way possible. It’s been over a year now and I still pinch myself every day that this is what I get to do every day.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

I have been pretty lucky so far that a lot of my clients have come to me through referrals, which is great. People trust recommendations from those they know, and a personal referral can lead to stronger client relationships and faster growth.
