Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Veronica Moreno. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Veronica , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
When starting a new business or maintaining one after 25 years like I have, it is so important to have support from your friends and family. My whole business has relied heavily on word of mouth. Even though I have done marketing through popular search engines, nothing beats a great referral. Some may assume that I’m busy enough and don’t need added pressure to my schedule but I would never deny a new person to sit in my salon chair. I would encourage my friends, loyal clientele and family to keep Geofox.studio in the forefront of their minds when it comes to recommending a hair salon.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Veronica Moreno, I am a creative, an artist and a hairstylist by trade. Born and raised in both Houston and Laredo, Tx. That is where I started my hairdressing career as a new stylist and then a Senior National Educator for John Paul Mitchell Systems. I moved to San Diego,CA with dreams to do hair for professional photo shoots. Through networking and meeting other creatives, I began attending photography meetups. There I shared my talents, along with everyone else, to make beautiful photos where we can all benefit for our portfolios. It started off as a way to build my business but in turn it built my incredible life here! The people I’ve met and the projects we’ve done, have enriched my life in so many ways. When I think about the hundreds of shoots and experiences I have had, I feel so blessed.
My clients are so used to me doing something in film or print that they always ask what am I doing now or what’s next. My friends and I are passionate about filmmaking, it’s my guilty pleasure. We wrote and shot a short film about my parents coming to the US from Mexico. It’s a story of struggle, tenacity and the little bit of luck it takes to make it. We can totally relate to that!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Consistency is key for me. Although I have bounced around trying to find the perfect fit for my business, my phone number has always stayed the same. The quality of my work, the care and appreciation for my clients stays consistent with my values. I want my people to feel welcomed in a judgment free zone. A place where they can be free to express themselves through the good and the hard times. I want to really focus on giving them an experience of peace and joy along with their hair maintenance or transformation. I always say, “You can feel my haircuts more than see them sometimes.”
I’m trying really hard to convince myself to do online booking and maybe I will, but for now, we text.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Our team at Geofox.studio is growing! My spouse and business partner, Dice Moreno, decided that being a hairdresser was very similar to being a therapist and so they quit their job as a social worker and dove straight into the world of Cosmetology! With their amazing skills as a student advocate, Dice has a beautiful way of communicating with people. I have been an educator, a leader and a speaker for many events, including talks for the youth at the YMCA. We both love our community here in Hillcrest, we donate our time and money to organizations that are dear to our hearts. We provide haircuts on a sliding scale for our friends in need. The stylists that work with us and around us are also involved in giving back when they support our little shop. Our mission is to continue to serve others, educate on LGBTQIA+ issues, and be a beacon of light for those stumbling in the dark.
