Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hong Qiu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hong , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
One of the biggest trends in the field of User Experience (UX) design in recent years is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with user experience. AI is no longer just a behind-the-scenes algorithm; it is starting to directly influence how users interact with systems and is even redefining the boundaries of user expectations. This trend presents great opportunities but also brings some challenges.
I remember a project I worked on where the client requested the design of a system capable of automatically optimizing ad placement strategies. In the past, this type of task usually required manual analysis and adjustments, but now, with the introduction of AI, we were able to develop a system that could automatically adjust ad content and frequency based on user behavior as they browsed the website. This not only increased ad conversion rates but also significantly reduced labor costs.
In the early stages of the project, we encountered a key challenge: how to make the AI decision-making process transparent and trustworthy for users? Users often have concerns about “black-box” AI systems, especially when they don’t understand why certain decisions are being made. This led us to consider explainable design (Explainable AI, XAI). Ultimately, we decided to use visual charts and real-time data to explain the AI system’s working principles to users. This not only enhanced their trust in the system but also made them feel more comfortable during use.
This trend brings many opportunities. First, the introduction of AI allows us to gain deeper insights into user behavior, enabling us to design more personalized and thoughtful user experiences. Second, as technology advances, many repetitive tasks will be handled by AI, allowing designers to focus more on creative work. However, there are also concerns, such as whether AI will replace some design roles and how to fully utilize AI while ensuring user privacy and data security.
Overall, the fusion of AI and UX is undoubtedly a huge opportunity, but it requires us to rethink the role of designers and further enhance our skills in order to continue thriving in this trend.
Hong , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My journey into the design and branding strategy field was a natural progression given my academic background and passion for the industry. With a major in design and branding strategy, I was equipped with the skills and knowledge to navigate the intricate world of design. After graduating from university, I transitioned directly into the internet technology industry, where I found my footing and honed my expertise.
What sets me apart from other designers is my comprehensive understanding of the entire lifecycle of digital products. I don’t just focus on the aesthetics or user interface; I’m deeply involved in every step, from the initial concept to the full operation of a product. I understand how to build a digital product from the ground up and, more importantly, how to design a product that genuinely resonates with its audience, ensuring it meets both user needs and business goals. This holistic approach to design is what I believe distinguishes me from many others in the field.
One of the achievements I’m most proud of is a project I worked on this year called AI Ad Manager. This product leverages AI technology to optimize the ad placement process for advertisers, automating the decision-making process and making it more efficient and effective. The project has received significant recognition, winning internationally renowned awards such as the iF Design Award and Red Dot Award. These accolades have been a tremendous source of motivation for me, as they validate my design capabilities on a global scale and encourage me to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in UX and branding.
What I want potential clients and collaborators to know about me is that my work is not just about making things look good; it’s about solving real-world problems through design. Whether it’s creating seamless user experiences, optimizing ad campaigns, or developing innovative digital products, my focus is always on delivering tangible results that make an impact.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to bring ideas to life and see them make a tangible impact on people’s lives. Whether it’s solving a problem through a well-designed product or creating an experience that resonates with users, the process of turning abstract concepts into something that can truly benefit others is incredibly fulfilling.
One of the greatest joys is witnessing how a thoughtfully crafted design can change the way people interact with technology, streamline processes, or make their lives easier. The sense of purpose that comes from knowing that my work is not just visually appealing but also practical, functional, and valuable to users is what keeps me passionate about what I do.
Additionally, being part of an ever-evolving field like UX means there’s always room for growth and exploration. The challenge of staying innovative, adapting to new technologies, and pushing creative boundaries is something I truly enjoy. Every project feels like a new opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute in meaningful ways.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Looking back, I wish I had discovered a few key resources earlier in my creative journey. Design systems like Google’s Material Design would have helped me create more consistent, user-friendly products from the start. Similarly, UX research tools such as Hotjar or UserTesting could have provided valuable insights into user behavior, refining my designs more efficiently.
Mentorship is another resource I didn’t explore soon enough. Having guidance from experienced designers early on would have been invaluable. Lastly, design thinking books like “The Design of Everyday Things” and AI tools in platforms like Figma could have accelerated my workflow and creative process. These resources would have provided clarity and structure much earlier in my career.
