We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Growth is exciting, but from what we’ve seen across thousands of conversations with entrepreneurs it’s also dangerous if costs aren’t watched closely – sometimes costs can grow out of control outpacing revenue growth and putting the viability of the entire business at risk. How have you managed to keep costs under control?
Since, I’m in the skincare industry the number one thing I can come across is revenue and costs. When starting out, you should keep your prices very firm and make sure you’re profiting correctly. I said that to say this, for example it’s compare and contrast. You have to factor in business needs: supplies, ingredients, bulks, profit, loss, and much more depending on the area of business, you specialize in. I’ve managed keeping costs under control by budgeting, having a marketing plan, and the most important one is keeping track of my fixed and variable expenses. Because; my variable can vary from month to month, as to my fixed expenses aren’t going anywhere, whether it’s a change in my sales, or volume. It stays the same. Advertising and marketing costs, but you get that back with in increase in sales due to the traffic. I have a financial advisor that helps me manage my company, to help manage cash flow with free advice on controlling expenses. One thing my grandma would always tell me was to make sure I come out ahead and not in the red and that stuck with me to help me grow, maintain my business.

Tyler , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into my business during COVID, because everything was literally shut completely down, or had limited hours. Prior to the pandemic happening, my skin had started getting real bad I actually use to pick at my face which is an absolute NO-NO! My dermatologist gave me something that would treat, and fade my dark spots on my face. I used it for about a good seven months, and realized certain cleanser and skin cream is not working for my face. So, I researched up the ingredients in the product, and I see why my face wasn’t clearing the way it was supposed to. So, about this time the pandemic had started, I thought to myself “I have to figure something out for my skin, immediately.” I researched natural, organic skin products that would help certain skin blemishes, whether it was: dark scars, marks, reoccurring acne, hormonal acne, so when I gathered all my research I ordered the ingredients, I knew what ingredients not to mix together to cause a skin reaction, on anyone. I made my oatmeal, milk, and honey soap which helps in eczema, irritation a person may have. The oatmeal, milk, and honey soap soothes the skin from any inflammation, rashes, redness. It soothes, and moisturizes the skin, basically calming your skin down.
I know many people battle with many cons involving facial and body care and so I wanted to help people solve and sooth their skin with natural products whether it was for their skin or face.
The problems I solve for my customers is my prices being affordable for strictly skin and body care, because we have to wear our skin everyday.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Being involved is the biggest one, it shows your team that you can trust them with the workload you’ve delegated for them to do. Offering regular breaks, or extended time off employees being able to have time off extends morale. I ask my team for feedback, in ways I can serve them better! I always want my team to be transparent about anything involving the business, so we can help manage any changes and eliminate any challenges that may occur. I appreciate everyone who is apart of my team.. I’m so thankful for them!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I look back on my journey and how far I’ve come, I’m reminded by God everyday that he’s always here with me! God has shown me several times he’s not running with me, he’s walking with me to take my time.
A shift in my planned career that I had planned vs what God’s plan was for me and he demanded I see it! I remember I was going to school to be DR but I ended up doing a complete 360 in my life, I never expected that nor did I see that one coming! Entrepreneurship and modeling took over, and made me do a career switch! Yeah, I had a side hustle on the side which was my skincare business, but I never thought it would became my main, or being a lash-artist & model would turn into full time! Self-doubt and defensiveness challenged me I just knew I wanted to be a DR which I couldn’t understand why it was happening, I felt like everything hindered me from pursing my actual dream that I thought I had planned for myself. I had followed the steps, did everything right to my knowledge and God kept showing me “I have something for you”. I took a break for about a year from everything to gather my mind, and prepare for new changes and challenges and navigated my new journey. I wasn’t prepared for entrepreneurship I was learning as I went, I was in a dark place accepting this new life because I wanted to be a DR
But, as I took accountability and responsibility for shaping my future. Finding it was a process that was not easy. It required me to step out of complacency and into action.
Two years later, I thrived in entrepreneurship, lashing and being a model. I also still had made some exciting accomplishments in the medical field, along the way when I thought it was over but it wasn’t. Trusting God shows you you’re not the one in control of your life, HE IS. Moving forward required my action, even when I wasn’t sure I could do it.
I’m glad I went through that dark time, of transitioning my life into what God wanted me to do, was the absolute best thing for me and I’m so thankful for it. I gained so much insight an knowledge to navigate through life during times God calls you to do something and more about myself to handle situations even when you don’t feel like you can show up properly for it, when God calls you to do it it’ll get done! With each challenge to resiliency, resiliency is strengthened
