Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Shores
Hi Kimberly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I embarked on my journey in home design six years ago. During this time, I supported my husband, Michael, who is a real estate broker, in our real estate business. As my involvement in the real estate sector deepened, I developed a profound appreciation for the art of home design. This passion led us to start flipping homes together, a venture we have pursued with unwavering dedication. For the past six years, transforming houses into homes has been my guiding principle, and I am committed to this passion for the foreseeable future.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Flipping homes is far from a straightforward endeavor. It is not a path devoid of stress or obstacles. The process of designing and renovating properties is characterized by numerous challenges, including scheduling issues with subcontractors, unforeseen termite infestations post-demolition, and water damage, among others. Each project presents its own set of surprises, particularly when revitalizing outdated structures. Despite these difficulties, the final results often justify the complexities and challenges encountered along the way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I focus on renovating and reselling personal properties. My expertise lies in transforming dilapidated homes requiring extensive renovations into custom residences tailored to meet diverse family needs, including organization, storage, and timeless finishes. I am particularly proud of our latest project, the 10th Street renovation. Originally a 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom, 1,350-square-foot house in severe disrepair, it had endured significant damage from Hurricane Michael in 2018 and recent tornadoes in January 2024. Despite initial skepticism about the feasibility of this project, we undertook the challenge, including extensive structural repairs. The result is a beautifully transformed 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 1,600-square-foot home, marking our largest project to date and the first involving a major rebuild. This accomplishment not only demonstrated my ability to undertake complex renovations but also reinforced my commitment to creating unique homes. Unlike typical builder-grade designs, I strive to infuse each project with distinctive styles, colors, and textures, ensuring that every home stands out while appealing to a broad market. My goal is to deliver more than just a house; I aim to offer a one-of-a-kind home experience for buyers.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Between my husband Michael and me, he is undoubtedly the greater risk-taker. I tend to approach decisions with skepticism and thorough consideration, often reflecting and seeking guidance through prayer before committing to new projects. Despite this cautious approach, I believe I have grown more comfortable with taking risks over the past six years. While prayer remains our initial response to new ventures, I am now more willing to embrace risk than before. My perspective is that risk-taking should be approached with careful calculation. By conducting thorough research, risks can be mitigated, but as we have adopted the principle, “with great risk comes great reward,” stepping out of one’s comfort zone can ultimately lead to significant rewards.
