Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian De La Garza
Hi Julian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my journey as a metalsmith during college, where an introductory course sparked a deep passion for the craft. From that moment, I was captivated by the process, immersing myself in class after class until I had absorbed every bit of knowledge available. After graduating, I honed my skills at Tiffany & Co., setting diamonds, and later as a model maker, where I had the opportunity to work on pieces for both Tiffany and David Yurman. These experiences deepened my understanding of the industry and refined my craftsmanship.
Today, I run my own online shop and work from my studio in Rhode Island, where I create jewelry inspired by gothic and brutalist architecture. My style leans towards the masculine, a rarity in the jewelry world, but when I first began shaping my brand, I made a conscious decision to create pieces that resonate with my personal taste—jewelry that I would proudly wear myself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been marked by various steps and stages, including restarting my brand multiple times when I felt unsatisfied with my work. I’ve come to realize the importance of accepting help and learning from others. I now have mentors whom I regularly consult, asking questions and seeking guidance. Every piece of information that can improve my business and brand is invaluable to me.
We’ve been impressed with Julian The 2nd Jewelry, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
This version of your narrative is already quite powerful, but here’s a refined version to enhance clarity and impact:
As a jewelry artist, I draw inspiration from the occult and myths, deeply believing in the connection between art and magick. I infuse each piece I create with intention and power, exploring how intent can amplify the strength of a piece or spell. This belief is intricately woven into every design I craft.
I work with bronze, sterling silver, and gold to create darkened modern jewelry for both men and women, using various fabrication methods, including 3D printing and casting. Each piece is unique, imbued with intention, and transformed from a mere accessory into a meaningful talisman with its own inherent power.
With a keen eye for detail and a profound passion for the art of jewelry making, my work has been exhibited in galleries and shows across the country. Collectors and enthusiasts are drawn to my designs for their distinctive blend of craftsmanship, symbolism, and intention. As I look towards the future, I continue to push the boundaries of my craft, exploring new techniques and materials to create even more powerful and evocative designs. My work invites the wearer to embrace their inner magick and harness the power of intention in their everyday lives.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Rather than recalling a favorite childhood memory, I would say the moment that most profoundly shaped me as a creator was watching The Goonies. The final scene, where the characters hold out a handful of gemstones, ignited a deep desire in me to one day possess something like that. I truly believe that moment influenced my decision to work in the medium of jewelry, where I could bring that fascination with gemstones to life.
