Chelsea, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?

I definitely took a big risk leaving from working a regular 9-5 to really pursue what I really wanted to do! I’ve always had a passion for hair or just beauty overall, and that’s exactly what I set out to do! After going to cosmetology school and finishing in 2022 and starting my career in different salons I finally found my way to having my own suite and business for myself as of 2024!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Chelsea, owner of Styled By ChelseaJ! I am Master Cosmetologist specializing in natural hair/ healthy hair offering services pertaining to your hair and skin needs. As of Oct 2024 I will be providing facial services!!! I have always had a passion for everything beauty but it started with my own hair as a pre teen in middle school, then realized I was good at it and started offering services to others in high school. Initially I did not go straight to cosmetology school right after high school which was shocking, I didn’t feel like I was committed yet. Fast forward to 2022 and I was finally a Master Cosmetologist and taking that leap of faith on what I love! My main goal for anyone who sits in my chair is to fall in love with the beautiful strands of hair they have and being comfortable within their self, I truly love that feeling of making someone’s day, I am your stylist and therapist all in one!

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.

So like I was saying I’ve always had a passion for anything beauty so literally no matter what job I was working I was always doing hair on the side! I had a in home salon at one point so I was like you know what let me just go to school and take this serious, so I went to school Jan 2021 and got my master cosmetologist license in March 2022. So the journey began after working in multiple hair salons, I’ve worked in natural hair salons, press bars, lash salon and finally decided to get my own suite in May 2024!!! It definitely was not an easy road to get here you really have to have some tough skin in this industry and just have confidence in yourself and your craft! I am so proud of where I am today it’s a lot of negative people out here and as long as you believe in yourself and truly love what you do you can go a long way.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?

I feel my most effective strategy has been personally handing people my cards, I get to truly engage with my potential client and they get a feel for me. Also word of mouth, my other clients to recommend their friends and family. Social media is good as well if you have a good following, I personally have a love/hate relationship with social media.
