We were lucky to catch up with Erica Wright recently and have shared our conversation below.
Erica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of my biggest risks was exposing my entire life on social media. For a long time I was pretty private with my life. Then I met some beautiful people and eventually we started our own podcast. That helped me get out of my comfort zone. Shortly it ended and I did not realize how much I enjoyed being in front of the camera. So I made the decision to get into content creating. Everyone sees my ups and downs. I do not hide much because I want my content to be authentic and relatable. At times that can get really hard because there is a microscope on everything I say and do. Everyone wants to tell you what you should or should not do. It gets frustrating but the thing that makes it all worth it are the people that see me for me and appreciate the authenticity and hard work I put into the work that I do.
Erica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a 42 year old trans women from Louisiana but currently reside in Dallas Texas. I never thought that I would get into content creating but something I enjoy doing. I have a passion for style and self expression. I love to motivate and uplift people to just be themselves unapologetically. I want to change the game for people that look like me in the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industry. An opportunity where we are not just doing work behind the scenes but actually be in the forefront so there’s representation for us. My content is very much lifestyle. My niche is mainly fashion but I tap into mental health, home decor, travel, relationships and romance, etc. Starting this journey I only had about two thousand followers on instagram . After two years in I am ranging 32k plus and increasing as of now. I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing creators who mentored me and really solidified that I am doing what I was meant to do. The most refreshing moments are when I meet some of my supporters in public. They are so welcoming and loving and I cherish all of those moments. They always talk about how I made an impression on them. Helping them overcome depression, creating their own style that showcases their personality, motivated them to get into content creating. I can honestly and truly say that I get life through giving others life. It’s so amazing.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I have learned throughout this journey is that other creators are not always supportive. If creators are threatened by you or they feel you are creating competition, they are not as friendly and that you will have to learn a lot on your own. I met an amazing creator by the name of Salina Williams. She was a breath of fresh air. She was that person who really gave me the best advice ever. She asked me one simple question. Who is Erica D. Wright? For a second I was stuck because that was the first time someone had ever asked me that. after an hour conversation she opened my eyes to my direction and my purpose. And that I really could do this on my own. It is great to have Inso in other creators but I needed to create a lane for myself.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
One resource I wish I would have learned about earlier and even know more now is having an EIN and\or LLC. Knowing how to do write offs and what I could or could not be filed. Something I am still learning now. Equipment , editors, travel, additional services can all be costly as a creator but with the right branding it would come back to you. It’s about running your business as the owner and employee.
