We recently connected with Madeleine Berckley and have shared our conversation below.
Madeleine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My summer internship this year was one of the most meaningful experiences I have ever had. I interned for a production company in Las Vegas called 3G Productions which gave me the opportunity to engage with a lot of different aspects and elements of production. I worked on projects with different teams for lighting, audio, permanent installations, and got to work with their video team as well. As a college student pursuing a degree in stage management, many of the opportunities I encountered are related to theatrical production so I found it exciting to work in an environment that was so different to what I am used to. I learned so much from everyone I worked with and the scale and variety of shows that I got to be a part of was absolutely insane. I went from a foam edm rave to working on a cybersecurity convention to working on part of the Wild ‘N Out tour with Nick Cannon. It helped me realize that I really do want to be in production and also reminded me of why I was drawn to it in the first place. Another part that made this summer so meaningful to me was that everyone I worked with was so passionate about what they were doing. Being around such wise people encouraged me to want to learn more about each department and it truly was a summer I’ll never forget.

Madeleine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am going into my senior year at the University of Texas at Austin and I am pursuing a degree in Stage Management. Throughout high school, I stage managed our school plays and musicals and my degree focuses mainly on theatrical stage management. However, soon after graduating high school I realized I didn’t want to be in the theatre industry long term so I started to find production opportunities outside of school. I am part of the production team for Austin Fashion Week and this past year got to stage manage for SXSW Music Fest. I am excited to see where production takes me after I graduate from UT.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is showtime. There is so much planning and work that goes into a show before it actually happens and in this industry, you get to witness your final product when the show is happening. It can be a surreal experience and to me it makes everything else worth it.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am constantly driven by the fact that this career allows me to be as creative as I want. Being raised by two musicians, I have always loved live music and feel at home in that environment. My goal in life right now is to work as many concerts as I can because that is the kind of live entertainment I enjoy most. I recently took a new job as a booking manager for a music venue in Austin and getting to interact with so many different types of musicians has been incredible.
