We recently connected with Lydia Simone and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lydia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
One of the kindest things anyone has ever done for me as a fashion designer was when several models, who had previously worn my designs, went out of their way to recommend my work to top fashion show producers. Without any prompting, they spoke highly of my unique creations, showcasing not just my craftsmanship but the passion and care I pour into each piece. Their advocacy led to my designs being featured in prominent fashion shows, where they graced the runway to widespread acclaim. It was a humbling moment, knowing that their trust and belief in my vision helped open doors that elevated my career to new heights.
This particularly pivotal moment in my career came when a fashion show producer reached out to me on Instagram, expressing interest in my work for an upcoming New York Fashion Week (NYFW) event. The connection was sparked through a recommendation by a model who had worn my designs in previous shows. After reviewing my portfolio and discussing my creative vision, the producer offered me a spot to showcase my collection during NYFW. It was a whirlwind of excitement and preparation, as I worked tirelessly to create a cohesive, cutting-edge collection that would make a statement on one of fashion’s biggest stages. The opportunity to present my work alongside some of the industry’s most renowned designers was both a career milestone and a testament to the power of networking and genuine support within the fashion community. Definitely the kindest thing a person has ever done for me. I will never forget it.
Being invited to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) by a fashion show producer stands as the kindest and most meaningful experience in my career. It wasn’t just an opportunity—it was a validation of years of hard work, creativity, and perseverance. The fashion world is incredibly competitive, and to be recognized at such a prestigious event signified that my designs had not only caught the attention of industry professionals but also resonated with them on a deeper level. The invitation opened doors to new networks, collaborations, and increased exposure, helping elevate my brand to an international platform. It showed me that the dedication I had poured into my craft had paid off, and that my vision had the potential to leave a lasting impact on the fashion industry.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a fashion designer is the exhilarating moment when I see my creations come to life on the runway. There’s something truly magical about watching models showcase my designs, each piece reflecting the countless hours of inspiration, sketching, and meticulous crafting that went into it. When I see my garments featured in articles, styled in advertisements, or my logo displayed on a New York Square billboard, it feels like a validation of my vision. These moments capture the essence of my dreams, transforming abstract ideas into real-life pieces that resonate with others, igniting a sense of pride and accomplishment that is hard to put into words.
Additionally, the journey of bringing these designs to reality is a deeply fulfilling experience. Walking alongside the models during a show, I witness firsthand the reactions of the audience—gasps, applause, and admiration—that reinforce my belief in the power of fashion. Each runway show becomes a celebration of creativity, a platform where my artistic expressions connect with diverse viewers. Capturing these fleeting moments through photographs allows me to preserve and share the story behind each collection. The appreciation I receive from others not only fuels my passion but also drives me to push boundaries, explore new ideas, and continually evolve as a designer. It’s this profound connection between my creative vision and the impact it has on the world that makes every challenge and setback worthwhile.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One pivotal moment in my journey as a fashion designer occurred during my college years when my professor unexpectedly advised me to quit the fashion industry altogether. This was particularly jarring because just before that, I had been awarded runner-up for Best Design in a competition for my collection inspired by the vibrant 1950s sock hop era. I had poured my heart into creating a stunning orange dress with a dramatic back bow and a two-piece set featuring an intricate orange print. As a freshman, I felt a deep sense of pride in my work, believing it showcased my potential and passion for fashion. Yet, just days after my triumph, my advisor entered the fashion computer lab and bluntly dismissed my achievement, claiming I didn’t deserve the award.
That moment could have easily discouraged me, but instead, it fueled my resilience. Rather than heed her advice, I became determined to prove my worth as a designer. I channeled that criticism into motivation, pushing myself to hone my skills and expand my creative horizons. This tenacity led me to participate in prestigious events like New York Fashion Week, Philadelphia Fashion Week, LA Fashion Week, and Atlantic City Fashion Week. Each opportunity was a testament to my growth and dedication to the craft. Reflecting on that harsh critique, I realize it shaped me into the designer I am today—someone who embraces challenges and uses them as stepping stones to success.
