We were lucky to catch up with Keara Coe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keara, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I have planned birthday parties, graduations, and weddings for family and friends for years. I have worked for corporate America for half my life. Until one day, one of the most influential people in my life departed from HER2 breast cancer. Crushed wasn’t the word; I can’t even explain the feeling I felt losing my grandmother. She was the anchor of my family. Most diminutive than a month after she departed, my life changed. She was 68, and I thought, why continue to say my dream job is to become an event planner? Why not put my dream into action? I launched Phenomenal Events LLC. Where did the name come from? Maya Angelou is one of my favorite activists. She has a poem called Phenomenal Women, and because she was phenomenal, I wanted to allow her to have some of me. I am still figuring it out. In my first year, I made $3000 from planning. I want the number to increase every year until it’s become international.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Keara Coe. I am 32 years old, a wife, and a mother of four. I attended Southern New Hampshire University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Management degree. I am a current grad student at UMass Global, where I am studying Organizational Leadership. I am a very spiritual person and have firm faith. I enjoy reading and nature. Family is everything to me, and the goal is to create generational wealth to pass down to generations.

How’d you meet your business partner?
My husband is my business partner. We have been married for five years but together for ten. At one point, my husband would share his point of view with me, but I would ignore him. As I grew, I learned he wanted the best for me and would always steer me in the right direction. I listen to every pitch he has; in fact, I do not make a single decision without his approval. He is the best business partner anyone could ever have. He believes in me more than I believe in myself at times.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Unlearning lessons can be challenging, especially in my current field. As event planners, we see it all. The good, bad, and the ugly. Often, my clients have suggestions about things they feel are best. It can be hard and challenging to accommodate, especially when I have seen what has happened before. However, I love making room for new ideas. Just because something didn’t work out so great for the first idea does not mean it will be the same approach. Although it is tough for my clients to lean on me to host a successful event, I have to lean on my clients and trust their opinions and ideas, as they are just as important as mine.
