Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Obenewa Obeng. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Obenewa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was in the youth choir at my church. We were having our yearly retreat, so we were getting our ministration songs ready. One song was a hip hop song, something we had never done before. There was a few rap sections in the song and our leader asked who would like to do the rap sections. So a few guys and myself volunteered. I had never rapped a day in my life other than rapping along to a song. Long story short, we went out and did our ministration which was a hit! I discovered how much I enjoyed the rapping process and everything that came with it. I still didn’t take it seriously until about a year after that and have been going ever since.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a church girl through and through. I grew up dancing on the praise team and playing the piano in the youth choir. But never did I think I would grow up to tell people about the love of God through my own songs…
I am a Christian Hip Hop Artist. I believe this is my mission from God to tell people who He is, what He has done, and what He can do through my rhymes. I believe there is a void He wants me to fill and that is the void of keeping it all the way real. To help people through life’s temptations, successes, loses, ups, and downs. His word says that we are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14), and I pray that my music can be the light in someone’s day.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Being a CHH artist is not for the weak. I was invited to minister at a program where I was the only CHH artist. I love to stay in the sanctuary and enjoy the other artists that minister before and after me so I can also receive before pouring my heart out. I see everyone deeply involved in what’s going on and it is beautiful to experience. It is now my turn to mount the altar and minster. So I’m doing my thing! But I noticed, one of the ministers in the front row sat down as soon as they heard the 808’s lol. This is something I’ve noticed a few times when I have been out to minister. And it has been something that has discouraged me many times.
But I had to remind myself that God called me to do this. So whether they like it or not, I will worship and praise Him using the gift He has given me. It was CHH that drew me closer to God, so I know it works! The Spirit of God is in it, you just have to align yourself and you will feel it. I had to understand that it is not my responsibility whether people receive it, it is up to them. I am just the vessel and that is enough.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing people s lives being changed through my music. I’ve received so many messages about how someone was blessed by my music, they were able to make it through a situation, or it just simply made them feel better.
