We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daniel Nishiguchi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Daniel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve been a music producer for over a decade now. I started my musical journey at Garnish Music School in Los Angeles and learned under the tutelage of Promnite, Penthouse Penthouse and other LA-beat scene producers back in 2013.
In the beginning, I wish I didn’t put so much stock in trying to make the “one hit wonder” track and instead just focused on finishing music. Some of the best advice I got was just keep making music, every track is going to get better and better because you learn new tricks, new ways of processing and new ideas.
I think the biggest skills you can have in the beginning is persistence and determination, you don’t have to be a musical genius to become a successful producer! I think the biggest obstacle was (and still is) time, it really does take hours of dedication to learn how to produce.

Daniel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Daniel Nish and I produce under the tech house moniker Luxo. I fell in love in electronic music in the late 2000’s going to raves in Los Angeles and music festivals like Coachella and I haven’t looked back.
I’ve released on labels such as Repopulate Mars, CID’s Night Service Only, Hood Politics Records and more. I also run an underground house label called Rock Bottom Records. I’ve toured across the nation and played at iconic venues like Exchange LA, Bloom San Diego, Monkey Loft Seattle and others. I also hold a residency at Portland’s largest nightclub 45 East and have played with some of the biggest names in the industry like James Hype, John Summit, Tchami, Duke Dumont and SIDEPIECE.
Some of my major releases have garnished over 100,000 plays across music platforms and have been supported by the biggest DJ’s in the world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to play my music for people. I love seeing people dancing to music i’ve created!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started making music as an outlet for my creativity and not really having a plan. It took me years in the industry to realize that I didn’t want to just make music to make music, I wanted to make a career out of it. Realizing that, I had to shift my thinking from a passion to a business.
