We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Caroline Hanson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Caroline, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
This was actually one of the easiest parts of setting up my business. Being a western lifestyle/rodeo photographer, I knew I wanted something I could shorten into a brand for my watermarks. I have a younger brother and sister, so the 3 in Hanson3 represents all three of us. I like that I can shorten it to H3. Just like a ranch brand.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started photography with just my iPhone. I’m a flight attendant for a major airline, and I would use my layovers to shoot. I grew up riding horses, so when I really started getting more serious in photography, I knew I wanted to start photographing horses and equestrian events. Right now I offer private shoots for any client who wants to create lasting memories with their horses, and I love shooting them in action doing whatever equestrian discipline they may be involved in. I’m most proud of everything I’ve come to learn in the almost 2 years I’ve been shooting (and not just photography, but also. learning about each discipline). I think what sets me apart is being able to take fast action shots and turn them into intimate moments, tailored to fit the rider and their personality.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Hands down, the most rewarding part of my job are the reactions I get from clients when I show them their photos. I love getting to capture people doing what they love, and I love how happy it makes them to see their hard work captured on camera.
Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
I actually just recently missed filing my taxes! haha. I didn’t realize I had to file quarterly sales taxes (I’m based in Texas). I’d say the hardest part of running a business is the actual “business” side of things. I”m sure other creatives probably feel this, but the creativity side Is easy, crossing t’s and dotting I’s though, that’s where the challenge lies for me.
