We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Gayan Poovendran. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Gayan below.
Gayan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I think my parents did a lot of things right when I was growing up. They moved from Sri Lanka, and my dad was already a doctor, however, when coming to this country, they faced a lot of adversity. They gave me many lessons to help fight that adversity. They taught me the importance of working hard and staying humble. They also taught me the importance of living life today and not waiting for some milestone to happen. When I was very young, my dad was diagnosed with a kidney issue, and was told that he wouldn’t live to see the age of 65. He use that as a springboard to make sure that we experienced life as a family and built really strong memories throughout our lives together. As a result, I got to see a lot of the world, which has really shaped my worldview. As a bonus, he has well exceeded that life expectancy, and he is now 76 years old. However, without him making sure that we focus on living life, he may have been too busy working, and my childhood and early life would’ve been much different.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I knew I wanted to be a physician from a young age. How I got into sports and regenerative medicine is a story more of me, trying to heal myself. When I was in college, I had a shoulder injury from working out. I saw some family friends who were orthopedic surgeons, and they advised me was to deal with it and manage symptoms as long as I could. They strongly suggested I avoid the surgery as the recovery may not have been optimal. I had received a lot of cortisone injections in my shoulder to help manage my symptoms and physical therapy. I always struggled with issues. In medical school, I was getting really frustrated knowing the damage I was doing to my body with all the injections. Additionally, I wouldn’t have been able to go through the surgery and recovery without taking time off of medical school. I was seeking alternative methods that may actually help me to heal. That’s how I came across PRP therapy. Stem cell was a much newer thing at the time, and regenerative medicine was not really something excepted by mainstream medicine. I had some treatments on myself and noticed a vast improvement in function, as well as in the longevity of my relief. I’ve taken that personal experience and translated that into how I help my patients. I think what set us apart is that I have a lot of experience on both sides of the needle. Not only have I done thousands of these procedures, I’ve had quite a few done on myself. I know exactly what the patient is feeling and what the recovery is going to look like since I’ve gone through it myself. I can truly sympathize with them. I most proud of the relationships that I make with my patients. We start off as a doctor and a patient, but through our healing process, we truly end up becoming friends. We strive to not just be a doctors office, we are a concierge boutique of healing. I definitely would love the readers to know that regenerative medicine is something that can truly heal you and improve your quality of life.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
As funny as it may sound, I think it’s truly how much I care. I know most doctors care about their patients. I take that level of caring a step further, as I treat my patients the way that I would want to be treated. This ranges from phone calls to how the treatments are actually performed. I can’t count the times that people in the industry have singled out my level of caring as something that they know that they can trust.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
For me, it’s really been about building relationships. With the patients that I have treated, we go on a journey together. And we strive for the best, and when we get good results, they refer their friends and their family to me to help them the same way they were helped. Of course, none of the relationships would be as strong, and none of this would matter, if we didn’t get excellent results as well.
