We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristina Martin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kristina , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
My first commission actually came from a family member who was wanting some custom art for their home and had reached out via social media after seeing me post a few of my paintings. The initial post was not even intended to promote a sale of the art, but rather express my passion for art, and just truly admiring what I created so much to share it with others. Parting with my art was bittersweet, but also made me realize that I was able to monetize off of my hobby.
This interaction inspired me tremendously and made me realize my potential. My pass time for art essentially turned into an official business shortly after known as Stinasartstudio, and I began expanding my services into the world, and learning just how much art was used in so many different areas. I soon learned and that I was not restricted to one lane or form of art and there were many ways to benefit from my gift I was given.
Since then, I have become a self-taught photographer, created custom apparel with my art, and even had my first opportunity to paint a mural for my sons’ barbershop.
Kristina , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a local artist that specializes in acrylic painting and photography. I have done art since a young age, but decided to pursue it, more specifically during covid when I was spending more time in the house, and eventually turn it into a business.
The most rewarding thing about art is the ability to turn nothing into something with the stroke of a brush, or snap of a lens. It is even more meaningful to me when I am able to create a piece of art that honors someone or something that is special to my client. The reaction to the art is what I am most proud of.
My style is very bold and vibrant and tends to stray away from the natural realistic art I see a lot of and presents and animated fun free style and this is what I believes sets me apart from other art.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Most recently I have actually made the decision to expand my 9-5 career in the medical field and go back to school at the start of the new year. While this move allows me to provide for myself and my family the way I need to. It will also allow me to fund my art journey and pour into it, in a way I haven’t been able to yet, and allow me more time to focus on my art in the future.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to connect with others in my community through art while at the same time create passive income. I often take strolls through my neighborhood and find ways to connect with other small businesses in ways that supports them and myself as an artist, weather this be selling prints at their establishments, hosting paint nights etc. It is a great way to meet and share my passion with others.
