Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ned Dehan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ned, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I started my YouTube channel in 2017. Prior to that I had made some content in 2010 and 2011, but it had been very small. If I could change something, I would have bought the right camera in 2006 and started making YouTube videos from the beginning. Having more years and time to allow my channel to grow would have benefited me greatly. There is no time like the present. Start now.

Ned, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I create True Crime content on Black Box Online Radio. I started out by talking about different types of subjects, and I received more and more requests to talk about true crime cases. The ones that I have followed most closely are D.B. Cooper, Jack the Ripper, and the Zodiac Killer.
In 2021 I created a segment called “True Crime Talk Radio,” which allowed to talk about multiple subjects within a single episode. True Crime is a fascinating genre because it combines the natural elements of curiosity with human empathy. Sorry to say, curiosity did not kill the cat. Instead, it leads us down the rabbit hole and into the vortex.
I am proud of anytime that my audience has had a good experience with my channel and my content. As for being proud of a creation, In 2024 I launched a live segment called “True Crime Talk Radio in the Morning.” This allowed to discuss different aspects of the true crime world and respond to people in the live chat. I could do a show about Criminology, Forensics, and Criminal Psychology, and the audience can ask questions about anything they so choose.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal was and still is to create a daily program for people. It is not simply about getting lots of views and clicks. I try to upload in the morning, and I created “True Crime Talk Radio in the Morning.” I wanted to have something for people to listen to while they start their day with their morning coffee, a program that is nonthreatening, friendly, and comes across like you’re just chilling with one of your buddies.
Some people have told me that “you don’t need to upload so frequently. You can get the same growth with fewer episodes” or “don’t focus on your recording schedule so much,” but my ambition has not been to simply grow my channel or make flashy episodes. It is about making a show that people will want to hear when they start their day. Five days a week, they can know how to begin. If it makes Monday a little better for you, I will have succeeded.
I have been through times in life where I would also start the day with the hosts of a morning tv show, being half asleep and listening to them as I got dressed for work, and it felt like having a friend in the room. I have also had day jobs where I have been able to listen to audio, and I would follow radio hosts and livestreamers as they would put on a three hour show. It helps to pass the time, and you can learn things along the way. That’s what I want.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I create content on YouTube, and the platform has changed over the years. In 2010 and 2011, you could post any odd or ordinary video and get 100 views overnight, sometimes anyway. When I started my channel in 2017, I had zero views on my first eight videos. No one was watching or listening, except me. I thought my account was mishandled or something, but it just took time to get a following.
I remember when I received my first comment in 2017, I was beyond belief. These days it is normal to receive extremely small responses for the first several episodes. I have also noticed that certain content creators make excellent and well-produced content , but they hardly get the same numbers as other creators.
Even if not every video gets the result you want, it is always an upward and onward journey. I am at the point where there is no turning back, and I think a lot of other creators are on a similar ship.
Also, on your journey, remember that it is yours. Some people might try to interfere and take control of your creative content. Some people might even try to take control of your success. Having boundaries in the world is so valuable. As someone once said , “if you don’t have boundaries, people will eat you alive.”
But if you have put your heart and soul and time and energy into something, you can always make mental notes of the victories that are truly and purely yours. Keep notes of your accomplishments. Be honest and give credit where credit is due, but give yourself the credit that you deserve.
