We were lucky to catch up with Jamal Etienne-harrigan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jamal, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I were to start over today, knowing everything I know now, my focus would be on growing the business bigger, better, and faster. First, I would start with a solid brand identity from the beginning, avoiding the rebranding process I had to go through midway. I’d ensure that every dollar I used, whether from loans or investments, was tied to tangible revenue growth. A well-thought-out business plan would be my foundation, ensuring I could scale strategically. Building a team would be an immediate priority, allowing me to delegate tasks and avoid the pitfalls of going it alone—especially since not being in the same market as my family and early support system created a disadvantage.
SEO and website optimization would be a key focus early on, allowing the business to grow online without overspending on a new website until revenue supported it. I’d dive deep into Pittsburgh’s local market, focusing on in-person demos and saturating retail outlets like Giant Eagles, while also expanding online offerings. Timing, as I’ve learned, is crucial—I would wait on major product launches, like the sandwich in Getgo, until the right moment, ensuring the business wasn’t stretched thin by external circumstances, like the pandemic.
Additionally, I’d work on building stronger partnerships, particularly with Giant Eagle, creating tailored products to grow alongside them. I would limit wholesale offerings initially, instead focusing on targeted retail growth and strategic in-person events like food halls, church gatherings, and festivals, which could serve as brand builders. More meetings, events, and community engagement would be key to connecting with customers and driving growth.
Ultimately, I’d incorporate a long-term vision of diversifying into other business ventures, from gas stations and vending machines to real estate. Each step would be carefully planned to create a scalable and sustainable business model. And of course, I’d find balance—traveling for work but blending it with pleasure, creating a life where business and personal enjoyment go hand in hand.
Jamal, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Jamal Etienne-Harrigan, known as Uncle Jammy, and the founder of Uncle Jammy’s Sauces and Seasonings. My journey began in a family where food was central—my mother from Baton Rouge and my father from the Virgin Islands. This rich culinary heritage influenced my early experimentation in the kitchen, which led me from baking cocktail-infused cakes to crafting unique sauces and rubs.
One of my proudest achievements is how Uncle Jammy’s has evolved from a passion project into a beloved brand in the barbecue and wing culture. Since 2010, our sauces and rubs have been celebrated for their bold flavors and creative twists, resonating with enthusiasts across the country. I’m particularly proud of our flagship sauce, Area 51, which exemplifies our commitment to flavor innovation.
What sets us apart is our dedication to solving the problem of bland, uninspiring sauces. We provide a solution to flavor fatigue by offering creatively crafted, versatile sauces that transform ordinary dishes into extraordinary experiences. Our products are designed with high-quality, unique ingredients, ensuring every bite is a burst of flavor.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that Uncle Jammy’s is more than just a brand; it’s a celebration of bold flavors and culinary creativity. We are committed to delivering exceptional products and service, always aiming to build genuine relationships rather than simply making a sale. Our mission is to make every meal memorable and to bring a touch of excitement to your dining table.
In summary, Uncle Jammy’s stands out for its innovative approach to flavor, our dedication to solving flavor fatigue, and our commitment to fostering meaningful connections with our customers.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been our consistent, hands-on approach to being present in our community and engaging directly with potential customers. By attending high school gyms, small convention centers, food shows, home shows, and farmers markets, we’ve been able to personally introduce our products and connect with people face-to-face. This strategy has not only allowed us to showcase the unique flavors and quality of our sauces but has also helped us build strong relationships and trust within the community. Combining this personal engagement with targeted online marketing has broadened our reach, driving both immediate sales and long-term loyalty.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Building our reputation within the market has been driven by several key factors. First, our commitment to high-quality, unique flavors and creative formulations has set us apart and generated positive word-of-mouth. Second, our hands-on approach, including direct engagement at local events like food shows, farmers markets, and community gatherings, has allowed us to personally connect with customers and build strong, trusting relationships. Third, our dedication to exceptional customer service and our willingness to listen and adapt to customer feedback have reinforced our reputation as a reliable and customer-focused brand. These elements combined have established us as a respected and recognized name in the industry.
